Signs of spring are starting to show themselves! Our roads have been posted, the frost heaves are epic, robins are back, and Froggy’s sap lines and buckets are hung locally. And, we’ve had the first kids of the season! And it’s time to sign up for CSAs with your favorite farmer. CSAs provide much needed cash for season startups, and give you the consumer discounted access to the best food in the world.
These next couple of weeks, farm activity will go from zero to 60, as the goats begin to kid, the milk flows, and cheese making begins anew. In the meantime, we are busily cleaning up winter’s mess, and doing a deep clean of the dairy ahead of our annual inspection.
We are down to our aged inventory: feta, halloumi, dill havarti, gouda, and jack. But nights are still cold, and still call for macaroni and cheese, chili with cheese grated on the top, or how about a robust onion soup with cheese? Most of the ingredients are available right there at market.
We’ll be grilling up cheese bites again this week! And talk to us about volunteering to help feed kids once they start arriving mid March. Also talk to us about our new Free Choice Cheese CSA that you can use at any of our markets and at the farm stand.
Reminder: if the weather is bad enough to cancel school, we will not venture out. If kidding gets too intense, we may also miss a market. But other than that, we can brag about perfect attendance! 2020 is our 26th year at the Belfast Farmers’ Market. Over the years, we’ve watched our customers’ children grow up to be customers themselves. It’s been a wonderful ride.
We’ll be celebrating the market’s 40 birthday all year!
