Claims lead to fines

A rubbish bag maker has been fined $60,000 for misleading environmental claims, says the Commerce Commission.
The company was found guilty of 15 breaches of the Fair Trading Act for giving the impression of ‘environmental friendliness‘ and that its rubbish bags were oxy-biodegradable or biodegradable.

Definition of Oxo Biodegradable according to Wikipedia
(OXO) plastic is polyolefin plastic to which has been added amounts of metal salts (none of these are "heavy metals" except Cobalt—see heavy metals and *[2] ). These catalyze the natural degradation process to speed it up so that the OXO plastic will degrade resulting in microfragments of plastic and metals which will remain in the environment but will not be seen as a visual contaminant. The degradation process is shortened from hundreds of years to years and/or months for degradation and thereafter biodegradation depends on the micro-organisms in the environment.

Information concerning 'Green Washing’ can be found on the Ministry of Commerce Website.

GO GREEN Expo Wellington

The TSB arena on Wellington’s Queens Wharf was the venue for the first Go Green Expo in Wellington. Held over 2 days during the second weekend of October 2013. Approx 10,000 people attended the event over the 2 days and they were greeted with many different ‘green’ exibitors.

ZingBokashi attended this show and we had a very busy time talking to many interested persons including many enthusiastic users of the ZingBokashi System. The show will next be held in Auckland in April 2014 and ZingBokashi has already registered for this event, which will also return to Wellington in November.

Fuelling your Garden Soil – a biological approach

During my 25 years as an organic horticulturalist I was often asked "what do you do to grow such healthy looking vegetable’s?"

The answer is quite simple and involves doing what you have to do and do it when you have to do it. Put simply - a matter of performing certain tasks according to a plan. No special science knowledge is required however some understanding of plant growth and performance characteristics certainly helps.

Like most things the more you do it the easier it becomes, particularly if you observe closely what happens each season and record it. Many conditions of the soil effect the growth of bacteria. Among the most important of these are the supply of oxygen and moisture, temperature and the amount and nature of the soil matter and H ion concentration of the soil solution [PH] as well as the amount of exchangeable calcium present.

It is noteworthy that recent well known Scientist Dr Arden Anderson during a series of presentations to NZ farmers told them that the key ingredients to more sustainable soils was biology and fine lime [ calcium]. Most garden soils have one advantage over farm soils in that they have not been depleted of soil organic matter to the same extent as larger scale farmed soils and thus will have a better soil structure. ... read full article
