Dear DISC Members & Investigators,
We have several exciting DISC events planned to kick off the academic year!
On August 30th at 1PM PDT, Dr. Erika Crable will lead an Implementation Science Seminar (ISS) and provide an overview of her research focused on using policy D&I science approaches to improve the use of evidence-based substance use disorder treatment for underserved populations.
We are also delighted to host a quarterly ISS Series entitled “Maximizing Policy to Enhance Equity in Dissemination and Implementation Science and Practice.” Register for the first ISS session on September 10th @ 12:00PM PDT featuring Dr. Jonathan Purtle, Dr. Ross Brownson, and Dr. Nicole Stadnick. Discussion will cover questions one might ask in policy D&I research, thoughts on applying D&I frameworks to the policy level, and the importance of and challenges associated with building policy-research partnerships. Share your burning questions in advance of this session here!
Join us for our next DISC Journal Club on September 9th at 2PM PDT. Drs. Elva Arredondo and Ross Brownson will facilitate a rich discussion on infusing equity into D&I science and highlight their recent published works “ Implementation Science Should Give Higher Priority to Health Equity” and "Expanding Implementation Research to Prevent Chronic Diseases in Community Settings". Please submit your discussion questions ahead of time here!
We have launched Early Bird Registration for our upcoming 2-day, virtual DISC Advanced Series Workshop, "How to get funded in D&I Science"! The workshop is open to all DISC and ACTRI members, community partners, and anyone interested in building a diverse and sustainable D&I research portfolio.
Lastly, we wanted to acknowledge the very tragic and challenging events in Haiti and Afghanistan. Please consider donating to Hope for Haiti or UNICEF to promote and protect human lives including those of children during times of crisis.
With gratitude,
The UC San Diego ACTRI DISC Team

Dr. Desiree Shapiro is an Associate Clinical Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at University California, San Diego (UCSD)/Rady Children's Hospital. She currently serves as the Medical Director of the UC San Diego Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inclusive Excellence Program. She also serves as the Advisor for Student Wellness at UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Shapiro is passionate about innovative care delivery methods, partnering with communities and schools, co-creating mental health workshops, and empowering youth voice.
- How would you describe your D&I research in one sentence? My research is currently exploring the feasibility and impact of implementing educational initiatives to grow a more inclusive child and adolescent psychiatry workforce.
- What are three key research or practice issues that you are most passionate about? I am passionate about engaging in community partnerships and projects that have the potential to increase mental health understanding and awareness, decrease stigma, and promote wellbeing. When working with and learning from youth, schools, and community agencies, we are better able to approach challenges collectively and creatively; in addition, we build cultural empathy and awareness. It is an honor to work with adolescents, schools, and educators in San Diego on mental health literacy curriculum, workshops, and projects. Finally, I am passionate about cultivating kind and compassionate educational and working environments that allow for innovation, fun, and sustainable careers.
- What is something interesting or unique about your background? I am not the typical DISC super researcher so I am honored to have been interviewed! I was fortunate to have outstanding research mentors before and during medical school. Dr. Jodi Prochaska was an extraordinary sponsor who gave me the opportunity to learn about healthy behavior change and mental health from an esteemed and productive leader in the field. Later, another super mentor, Dr. Jim Sallis, encouraged my interest in physical activity and generously shared his expertise. After these experiences, I focused mostly on clinical training and care, organized medicine, and educational programming for a few years so recently jumping back into the creative world of research has been challenging, but absolutely rewarding.
- What have you gained from your involvement in the DISC? The DISC consults I have had with Dr. Stadnick, Dr. Brookman-Frazee, Dr. Sarah Linke, and Clare Viglione have been incredibly helpful and useful. Their collaborative and community centered focus have prompted me to reach out to colleagues in different disciplines and programs to explore overlap in ideas. Their team of experts offer so many talks, trainings, and educational offerings that are informative, welcoming, and meant to spark connection. The DISC is a wonderful resource with sincere and inspirational leadership.
