Gibson County Habitat for Humanity
       312 North College Street
Trenton, Tennessee  38382

The idea that became Habitat for Humanity first grew from Koinonia Farm, a community farm outside of Americus, Georgia, founded by farmer and biblical scholar Clarence Jordan. On the farm, Jordan and eventual founders, Millard and Linda Fuller, developed the concept of “partnership housing”. The concept centered on those in need of adequate shelter working side by side with volunteers to build decent, affordable houses.
In 1973, the Fullers decided to take the Fund for Humanity concept to Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo. After three years of hard work to launch a successful housing program there, the Fullers returned to the United States and called together a group of supporters to discuss the future of their dreams. From that dream, Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976. Today, Habitat now works in 1400 communities across the U.S. and in 70 countries around the world.
The mission for Habitat is simple: Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.
Habitat’s principles are simple as well. They are as follows:
  1. Demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ
  2. Focus on shelter
  3. Advocate for affordable housing
  4. Promote dignity and hope
Gibson County Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1992 and built its first house in 1994 in Milan. This spring, the Gibson County organization will begin construction on its 10th house. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable, interest-free mortgage.  With your support, Habitat homeowners achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better life for themselves and for their families.
Gibson County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director, Mary Jane Thompson, invites you to contact her with any questions or how you can be a part of this ministry. She may be reached at 731-855-7607 or by email at gibsoncountyhabitatforhumanity31@yahoo.com.
Thanks, Gibson County Habitat for Humanity, for your support of the Chamber and all you do for Gibson County!

Brooke Carson began serving her term as a Chamber Board Member in January 2016 for the Kenton area.
A graduate of Gibson Co High School, she spent her childhood growing up in the Bells Chapel community of Gibson Co – between Yorkville, Dyer, and Rutherford.  She received her Associate’s Degree from Dyersburg State Community College and her Bachelor Degree from Bethel University in McKenzie.  Brooke began her banking career as a part-time teller at First State Bank, now Simmons Bank, in Kenton upon high school graduation, and is entering her 17th year in the banking industry as the Branch Manager and Consumer Lender for Simmons Bank.

Brooke and her husband, Jamie, make their home outside of Kenton in the Mason Hall area with their 2 daughters, Ellie Grace (11) and Lizzie Kate (3).  The family attends New Salem Baptist Church in Mason Hall where they are active as Sunday school teachers, youth group activities, assistant Treasurer, and the Hands of Praise team, which raises awareness for the TN Baptist Children’s Home.  Brooke is also a 2011 alumni of Leadership of Gibson Co and a past Treasurer for the Kenton School Booster Club.

Why do you serve on the Board of Directors?
After participating in the Gibson Co Adult Leadership program, it opened my eyes to the role a Chamber plays in promoting Gibson Co and ensuring that they are equipped to meet the opportunities to not only gain new industry and work force, but to help grow the existing and long established businesses.  I wanted to be a part of that and to work with the local businesses in Kenton to help ensure they are aware of educational opportunities, networking events, and other support available through the Chamber.

What is the Chamber’s role in the business community?
A Chamber is only as good as the Executive Director, administrative staff, and the board wants it to be.  I feel, without a doubt, that the current staff, Libby & CeCe, have a true heart and passion for Gibson County and want it be successful.  The current board of directors mirrors their heart and is working together, to not only serve our individual communities represented, but the county as a whole.  In offering workshops, networking events, and other activities, the Chamber is able to unite the business owners and present a fully functioning county for potential new businesses, which in turn helps the citizens of Gibson Co with job opportunities and tax benefits.

Does your business have one of these signs?  If not, call the Chamber Office (855-0973) to find out how you can get yours.
You don't want to miss out!
