Happy VTOL Silver Jubilee!

First Annual Dinner (Oct. 7, 1944)The Vertical Flight Society was founded 75 years ago as the American Helicopter Society (AHS) on June 25, 1943. It was started by the early pioneers in the field, just as that new type of VTOL aircraft — the helicopter — was beginning to prove its worth. For three-quarters of a century, we've been leading efforts to advance the state of the art of vertical flight technology — from helicopters and tiltrotors to MAVs, UAVs, jet lift and beyond.

Now, a growing number of our 100 corporate members and 6,000 individual members are pioneering the next disruptive wave in vertical flight. It's electric! Over the past 5 years, VFS has led a series of workshops on the transformative vertical flight potential of electric VTOL, with dozens of hours of video recorded panels and presentations.

In April 2017, we launched, the first news site focused on the electric VTOL revolution. Other sites are now copying the eVTOL News™ newsletter, but none can match the expertise in VTOL technology of the Vertical Flight Society.

eVTOL Educational Videos

All special sessions and plenary events at the Vertical Flight Society's Forum 74 in Phoenix in May 2018 were video recorded and are now available online, and PDFs of the more than 40 presentations are available in the Vertical Flight Library.
  • 2018 Nikolsky Lecture on sUAS*
  • Promise and Progress of eVTOL*
  • Challenges of eVTOL*
  • Flight Qualification and Certification
  • Grand Awards Banquet
* Members Only, but anyone interested in eVTOL should be a member of VFS

In addition, the two short courses held at Forum 74 are available on a pay-per-view video-on-demand basis. Check out these trailers as an example of the in-depth technical content provided in more than 5 hours of lectures each:
  • Rotorcraft Modeling Short Course: This course reviews various rotorcraft configurations and the challenges they represent, examines how static and periodic trim are achieved, and explores blade dynamics, rotor aerodynamics and wake modeling.
  • Electric VTOL Short Course: The online course includes lectures on fundamentals of eVTOL, permanent magnet motors and hybrid electric VTOL experience.
