| | | BRINGING YOU BEST THEATRE FROM ROUND THE WORLD Dear <<First Name>>, I was mowing the lawn yesterday when I started thinking about this: why is it that I programme Live Performance on Screen? Well, firstly, and very practically, many theatre productions simply won’t fit on our stage whilst many productions will never tour around or even come to Australia. However, they are still amazing pieces of theatre that entertain, have amazing performers and tell incredible stories and I want to make sure Cowra audiences can access these.
We have partnered with Sharmill Films, the distributor of titles from the National Theatre in London as well as special musical theatre events from the West End and Broadway. We also work with Australian Theatre Live / Act 2 Distribution who fly around Australia capturing some amazing productions from the major and independent theatre companies like Sydney Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre, Windmill Theatre, Red Stich, Pinchgut Opera and many more. These partnerships allow audiences in Cowra to access some truly wonderful Australian and international theatre experiences. Some people may think “Live Performance on Screen is not as good as being there”. Yes, this is true BUT it is very close to it. And unless you’re planning on flying around the world and Australia to see all of these productions, the $25 ticket price is a very affordable way of accessing brilliant theatre.
So I programme these films to ensure that audiences in Cowra don’t miss out, to be able to see absolutely top-notch theatre, and to enrich their live through the arts by doing so.
And this week we present the first of 4 sessions of the latest offerings from the National Theatre with Jack Absolute Flies Again - a rollicking comedy that will be make you laugh, be uplifting and appeal to young and the young at heart.
I will be announcing a couple more titles soon but for now, I hope you enjoy this one as well as the many other films and live performances we have available at Cowra Civic Centre. We hope to see you soon! | | WOMEN TALKING by Miriam ToewsThe internationally bestselling novel based on real events. Now a major motion picture from writer/director Sarah Polley, starring Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, with Ben Whishaw and Frances McDormand. One evening, eight Mennonite women climb into a hay loft to conduct a secret meeting. They are determined to protect themselves and their daughters from future harm. While the men of the colony are off in the city, these women-all illiterate, without any knowledge of the world outside their community and unable even to speak the language of the country they live in-have very little time to make a choice: Should they stay in the only world they've ever known or should they dare to escape? Based on real events and told through the "minutes" of the women's all-female symposium, Toews's masterful novel uses wry, politically engaged humor to relate this tale of women claiming their own power to decide. | |
