Jonathan Cowra Civic Centre | | THIS WEEK AT THE MOVIES | | Get a glimpse into the world of Ukraine, its people and their lives before the most recent conflict. Hopes and dreams, wins and loses, individual and national identify are some of the themes of the three films we are presenting from the overall selection. 50% of every ticket sold will go to the Quilts for Ukrainians project run by Cowra volunteers who have made hundreds of quilts and blankets so far for Ukrainian children, mothers and elderly who have been displaced due to the horrific war in their homeland. Support this project by seeing one or more of these films. | | OLGA CTC | $14* | English subtitles | Drama
Using real-life gymnasts to land his debut on solid ground, director Elie Grappe presents a compelling psychological portrait of a dedicated young athlete on the cusp of great success. She’s so absurdly dedicated, and so breathtakingly talented, her teammates call her a robot. But she drives herself too hard, and there’s a breaking point. Friday 14 October at 7pm | | | HOME GAMES CTC | $14* | English Subtitles | Documentary Teenage Alina is a talented soccer player who practices in worn-out cleats that she’s sewn back together herself. When her mother dies, Alina’s cherished dream of a place on the national women’s soccer team becomes even more remote. Given the circumstances, it's astonishing how much patience Alina has for her family, and how lovingly she cares for her little brother and sister—even when she has no choice but to take them with her to a training camp, or sell her own belongings to support them. Despite it all, she fights to keep her soccer dream alive. Saturday 15 October at 4:30pm | | | SNIPER: THE WHITE RAVEN CTC | $14* | English Subtitles | Thriller After suffering a senseless tragedy at the hand of invading soldiers in the Donbas region in 2014, a former Ukrainian physics teacher renounces his peaceful way of life and seeks revenge. Upon joining the military as a sniper, he sets his sights on an elite Russian sniper whose elimination could change the tide of the conflict. Sniper is built on vengeance during the 2014 Russian invasion along with an accompanied present-day 2022 epilogue. It’s based on the experiences of a real-life conscript and unlike most any sniper movie you can think of, this time, we see how such super-shooters are selected and trained.
