Pointe Academy Collaborative Performance

Symphony Academy collaborates with Pointe Academy

We invite you to join us for our second collaboration with The Pointe Academy of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. Titled Interplay, the performances feature our Youth Orchestras Honors Ensembles (String Quartet, Woodwind Quintet and Brass Quintet) providing live music accompaniment for student dancers from the Pointe Academy. 7 p.m. Tue Apr 29 and Wed May 1 at the First Christian Church in Des Moines. Tickets are $15 at the door, $5 for students.

NEW!: Symphony Academy Chamber Orchestra

Des Moines Symphony Academy faculty member John Helmich has organized this ensemble, comprised of Symphony Academy faculty and Symphony Orchestra musicians. The first performance is on Mon May 20 at 7:30 p.m. with Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in C Major and Vasks' Epifania. This performance is free and open to the public!

Ray Songayllo retires

Raymond Songayllo retires

Pianist Raymond Songayllo has retired from the Symphony Academy faculty. Ray joined the Symphony Academy faculty in September 2003 and during his 10 year tenure with us, he taught private piano and composition lessons, courses in theory & ear training, coached student chamber music ensembles and performed in more than 15 recitals, frequently sharing the program with fellow pianist Bob Lien and members of our faculty as a collaborative performer. We are thankful for Ray’s teaching and artistic contributions to the Symphony Academy and want to wish him the very best in his retirement.
Joshua Johnson joins Symphony Academy faculty

Joshua Johnson joins faculty 

We are pleased to announce that hornist Joshua Johnson has joined the Symphony Academy faculty. Joshua is a graduate the University of Iowa and University of Nebraska. Along with performing with the Des Moines Symphony this season, Joshua currently serves as 2nd horn in the Lincoln Symphony, 4th horn in the Dubuque Symphony and Utility horn of the South Dakota Symphony.
Joshua joins Casey Maday and Christian Baughman as brass instructors on faculty here at the Symphony Academy.
