Symphony Academy Open House


Join us 1-4 p.m. Sunday, February 22 for our second annual Symphony Academy Open House! Bring your children and grandchildren for a fun afternoon of performances by current students and Academy faculty, musical activities and so much more. Learn more about this FREE event here!

Symphony Academy students in All-State Music Festival


Congratulations to the following Symphony Academy students musicians who participated in the 2014 Iowa All-State Music Festival Band or Orchestra:

Low Brass Clinic


Register today for a Low Brass Clinic, featuring Des Moines Symphony musicians Casey Maday, Will Baker and Bo Atlas (pictured) on Saturday, March 28 at Hoover High School. Students will learn brass techniques that will improve their music making, sound production and more. The day culminates with a performance and all participants will receive complimentary Des Moines Symphony concert tickets for that evening's performance.

Congrats, Michele Senger!


Michele Senger was named to School Band and Orchestra Magazine’s 2014 Class of “50 Directors Who Make A Difference." She recounts one of her most memorable moments: 

"One of my sweetest moments occurred when a former student returned to perform as a soloist with the Des Moines Symphony after winning a principal position with the Grand Rapids Symphony ... now he is a member of the New York Philharmonic."

Student accomplishments


Pianist Elizabeth Kirsner, from the studio of Irina Kaplan, won IMTA district auditions, and now, she is off to the state competition!

Pianist Shana Liu (pictured), from the studio of Sophia S. Ahmad, won the IMTA junior division state level and also placed as runner-up in the regional divisions, competing against pianists from nine states.
