Adventures Along the Seafarer's Trail!

Note from Lisa:

When it was learned that Amelia Earhart came to Noank (near Mystic) to get secretly married, it became big news.  Amelia is making news again now that a piece of  her plane may have been identified. I emailed my contact at Lockheed Martin (the maker of her plane) to see what he thinks. I will keep you posted! (The book, Mystic Seafarer's Trail, includes eye-witness accounts of Earhart's wedding, her somewhat shocking prenuptial letter written on Noank stationary, and the continued search for her plane.)

If you love goat cheese and baby goats, now is the time to visit Beltane Farm for their free tastings. The retired goats may follow you around, so don't wear your best shoes! And don't ask what male goats do to attract females until after the tasting. While you're still in that part of Connecticut, enjoy the view from the new winery, Preston Ridge Vineyard.

Fall is a great time to visit the Velvet Mill in Stonington. Working your way through its complicated maze of shops and studios is like touring Willie Wonka's Chocolate Factory--there's a surprise around every corner! Saturdays, 10 a.m -1 p.m., are a great time to go. There is a farmer's market, glass making demonstrations, beer tastings, and working artists of all kinds in their open studios.

If it's too snowy to journey outside but you want to see whales, click here to see our first whale watch --we thought it was thrilling!

In a recent boat ride down the Thames River, which included a brief machine gun escort, we happened to follow a submarine on its way out to practice sea maneuvers. I don't know which sub it was, but there is a new one preparing for deployment: USS North Dakota latest addition to sub force. It won't need refueling for 33 years!

There is no machine gun escort needed to follow these popular trails: You may want to visit the Coast Guard Museum while it's still located at the Coast Guard Academy. When attending a Change of Command ceremony, I saw some of the Coast Guard's amazing inventions.

Bring Out Your Beer!
I cracked up when I saw Patrick's photo on this Cottrell Brewery beer tap--especially since it was from my TV show. I interviewed Patrick on the importance of beer to the survival of the Mayflower passengers. Watch him in my TV show section.

Don't really know what hops and malt are when you attend a beer tasting? See my post, How to Brew Beer in New England (includes video of the White House making beer!).
