Quick NEWS & UPDATES

  • Due to ongoing concerns with Covid-19 and the Delta variant, Voices From War workshops will continue online for the Fall 2021 season. Founder and Director, Kara Krauze, is looking forward to returning to the classroom this fall as instructor for our 14th Street Y workshop!

  • As we continue to follow the news in Afghanistan, our thoughts go out to suffering Afghans and to our veteran community revisiting time served in Afghanistan and other deployments.

  • Afghanistan: Below are a selection of writings from veterans who have been involved with Voices From War, sharing experiences now, in the wake of the U.S. exit from Afghanistan, and/or from deployment...
  • BRANDON CARO, writes about war fatigue and memories of serving as a combat medic in Afghanistan in 2006-07 (in Task & Purpose), recounting comparisons to the exit from Vietnam.
  • Former instructor NATE BETHEA, writing as Nathan Bradley during his deployment, shared compelling dispatches from Afghanistan, 2010-12, writing for McSweeney's.
  • KRISTEN ROUSE shares moving analysis and oral recollections for MSNBC.
  • Also worth a look, Luke Mogelson (whose fiction we have read in our workshops), wrote presciently in 2012 about the difficulties of a U.S. exit from Afghanistan for the New York Times Magazine. ("The Hard Way Out of Afghanistan").

  • The Cuddy Family Foundation for Veterans launched a poetry journal in early 2021 and is accepting submissions for Volume 3 through October 31st. Details on their website.

  • SAVE the DATE! for our WINTER SHOWCASE on Sunday, DECEMBER 12th, 5:00 pm.

IN MEMORIAM

With sadness, we mourn the loss of Richard Enoch, a multiple-season participant in our Bronx workshop and visitor to the Manhattan class. We will miss Richard's unique poetic voice, along with his insights, candor, and heartfelt discussions. Most recently, Richard wrote about his love of bicycling and the Bronx, recollections of his time in the service and current constraints and experiences during the pandemic.

Richard Enoch was a Cold War veteran, who served honorably on active duty in the Navy. He was awarded a Sea Service Ribbon, graduated from Radioman “A” School, and participated in the Shellback Initiation. Richard earned a Master of Science degree from Long Island University. He lived in the Bronx.

Our thoughts are with his family.

Wishing everyone a relaxing end of summer and happy Labor Day.

We look forward to seeing you for our OPEN HOUSE on SEPT 12 and our workshops SEPT 22 (Wed.), SEPT 25 (Sat.), and onward, as we start the FALL season!
