Shady Grove Campground Open for the Season

Looking to stay close home, but also take a getaway to explore nature? Forsyth County’s Shady Grove Campground (7800 Allyn Lane Memorial Way) is open for the season and offers 110 family-friendly campsites along Lake Lanier!

Amenities include a beach and swim area, boat ramp with courtesy dock, glamping sites, group campsites with picnic shelters, a playground, restrooms and shower facilities. Site reservations can be made by clicking here and can be made up to one year in advance. Discounts are available for seniors, military and non-profit groups.

The 2021 campground season runs March 5-Nov. 29.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Recognizes Personnel at Annual Awards Ceremony

In March, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office presented awards to deputies and staff for outstanding service from the past year.

Sheriff Ron Freeman said that although the department highlighted several law enforcement personnel, the ceremony was only a small sample of the heroic actions the sheriff’s office does daily.

Below are the award recipients:

  • Sheriff's Leadership Award: Captain Jody Chapman

  • Bureau of the Year: Jail Bureau

  • Sheriff's Services Bureau Civilian of the Year: Alicia Porter

  • Sheriff's Services Bureau Deputy of the Year: DFC Jason Blackwell

  • Jail Bureau Civilian of the Year: Mike Durden

  • Jail Bureau Deputy of the Year: Deputy Kelly Maradiaga

  • Law Enforcement Bureau Civilian of the Year: Andrea Carder

  • Law Enforcement Bureau Deputy of the Year: DFC Austin Mathews

  • Volunteer of the Year: Reserve Deputy Jeff Wagner

Parks and Recreation’s Summer Activity Guide Now Available

Plan you and your family’s summer with the help of Forsyth County Parks & Recreation’s 2021 Summer Activity Guide. The guide includes information on a wide variety of camps, activities and programs offered.

Residents can view the guide and register online at parks.forysthco.com or in person at any of the county’s three recreation centers, located at Central Park, Fowler Park and Old Atlanta Park, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well as the Sawnee Mountain Preserve Visitor Center.

Printed copies of the activity guide will also be available at recreation centers.

Join Parks and Recreation for a Community Yard Sale

Forsyth County Parks & Recreation invites you to a community yard sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 17. The outdoor event will take place in the parking area of the Central Park Recreation Center (2300 Keith Bridge Rd.).

Event organizers expect more than 20 vendors selling a variety of household goods, children’s items, tools and more. Admission for shoppers is free.

Register for KFCB’s Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Event

Keep Forsyth County Beautiful (KFCB), in partnership with the Forsyth County Recycling and Solid Waste Department and the City of Cumming, invites residents to participate in the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Recycling and Disposal event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, at the Cumming Fairgrounds' parking lot 3 (235 Castleberry Rd.).

Online registration and a printed or electronic confirmation are required for participation. Registration for County residents opens at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 26, at keepforsythcountybeautiful.org. Availability is on a first come, first served basis until the maximum amount of materials or vehicles are registered for participation.

Items that will be accepted include corrosive, ignitable, toxic and/or reactive HHW such as paints, cleaners, oils, fuels, batteries, fluorescent or HID light bulbs, herbicides, pesticides and more. Items that will not be accepted include medical waste, needles, ammunition, explosives, pharmaceuticals and non-hazardous items.

Take your love for gardening to a new level and join Senior Service’s Garden Club! The Live Well Community Garden, located at Sexton Hall (2115 Chloe Rd.), needs people just like you who love to watch the growing fruits of their labor.

Forsyth County Senior Services also offers virtual garden programs. Read their newsletter to discover all the offerings available for those 50 and better.
