We are excited to announce that
Habanero Architecture in partnership with 2A Design took an honorable mention for the ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) Fast-track program launched last February by The City of Raleigh. Although our design will not participate as part of the ten selected projects to be pre-permitted, we feel humbled and grateful to get this recognition from the jury. Thank you to the City of Raleigh, the Planning Department, and the jury. Congratulations to the selected design teams to be announced.

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are small self-contained homes located on the same lot as a principal residence. While ADUs are common in Raleigh’s older neighborhoods, they do not exist in much of the city due to 20th-century laws and homeowners’ association rules prohibiting their construction. In 2020, as a response to increasing demand and an extreme housing shortage, the City of Raleigh took a big step forward by allowing ADUs to be built citywide this year. The Fast-Track program will include ten selected (pre-permitted) designs for citizens of Raleigh to purchase and build.
Our Team submitted four designs for this charette-style competition. A studio design, a family size design, a standard design, and a large design. Any of these are available to purchase and to be developed for construction. If you are interested in designing and building your upcycled shipping container ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit), please contact us. If you are a developer or builder and you are interested in identifying the city using these types of designs, we should also talk.

I would like to thank and recognize the talent of 2A Design, a French architecture firm that has been designing and developing shipping container structures for over ten years in the region of Brittany. This strategic alliance was formed with the goal of importing design solutions and expertise from a firm that understands innovation and is aligned with what Habanero Architecture strives to offer in our area. Densifying cities is one of the best sustainable urban strategies, not to mention, a real urgent need in our current housing market crisis. Thank you 2A Design for this collaboration.
