Fairfield Town Government

Town offices will have limited staff in the building while the rest will be working remotely. Some offices will be open by appointment only. 

Bigelow Center for Senior Activities 

The Human and Social Services Department and Bigelow Center for Senior Activities are closed to the public. All activities and individual, in person appointments are cancelled. We have limited staff onsite to answer calls and assist residents with their needs during this unprecedented time. Please call if you should need assistance. if you get voicemail, leave a message. Town Planning & Zoning

The Town Plan and Zoning Department remains committed to serving our citizens during this emergency health crisis. While our building may remained closed to the public, we will remain available to continue to provide information and to process permits. During this emergency, the permitting procedure can be found here. Solid Waste & Recycling 

The Town of Fairfield Transfer Station hours are 7 AM to 3 PM  Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Saturday hours are 7 AM to 12 PM. The Transfer Station is closed on Wednesdays until further notice. 

Residents using the facility should bring exact change only.

Office of Community & Economic Development 

HoursBY APPOINTMENT ONLY Monday - Friday: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (Call 256-3120) 

Effective immediately and until further notice, the Office of Community & Economic Development will be operating on a limited basis with reduced staffing and access to the public to enforce social distancing and to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.  All inquiries and requests for service will be handled remotely via e-mail or by phone to the greatest extent possible.  All correspondence and applications for assistance should be submitted electronically or by mail.  Personal interactions will be limited and, to the extent necessary, handled on a case-by-case basis and by appointment only.  No drop-ins or unscheduled visits will be permitted.  Please contact the office at (203) 256-3120 for any questions or concerns.

Registrar of Voters

The most common questions we receive are about individual's voter registration and party status, which can be found by using the online voter lookup tool at If you have other questions, you can contact the Registrars using the emails in our office directory, or you can call us at (203) 256-3115. While we are not in the office, our voicemail is being sent to us by email, so if you leave a message we will respond within one business day to your request.

Registrar of Voters

The Fire Marshal’s Office will continue to take permits and complete limited inspections until further notice. Permit Applications are now available online.

Schedule Inspections via 203-254-4720 or via after you have called the Building Department as we will continue to work together moving forward.

We have a new protocol for the safety of our inspectors and the public. Visit our website for more information. 

The Fire Marshal’s Office will continue to receive and process permits. All of the required permit applications can be found on the Building Department’s Link found below. Click the drop down box to find the appropriate permit. You may send your application to our e-mail address for review and we will get back to you upon completion. You will need all of the fields filled out and any permissions or licensing to be scanned with the permit. Please be sure to include the entire scope of work to be completed on your application.

We are also adding a drop box outside of the main entrance at 140 Reef Road for dropping off permits, plans and applications. All application materials must be deposited into the drop box by 11:00 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only. Do not leave any checks or payments in drop box.

Department of Public Works

Your Department of Public Works team remains committed to providing excellent service to the people of Fairfield during this global health crisis.  The primary focus of our work is to protect our employees and the community at large. To make sure that we minimize the risk, our First Selectwoman has taken the following measures to reduce the risk of exposure at Town properties:

- All public parks, beaches and facilities including the marina, Lake Mohegan trails, cascades, all public recreational spaces and the public golf courses are CLOSED.
- New and vigorous cleaning protocols are in place for all Town Hall offices.
- Minimizing face-to-face contact with the public.

Fairfield Public Library

Fairfield Public Library is closed until further notice. 

Please hold all library materials until the library reopens. The library does not charge fees or fines for days we are closed. Items on hold will be available for pick up when the library reopens. You can contact us by using our Ask a Librarian link.

While our physical services are suspended, you still have use of our digital resources available 24/7: downloadable audio & video, e-books, magazines, training & crafting resources and more through our Digital Resources page.

Most databases are also available from home with your Fairfield Public Library card. Please visit our databases page for a full listing and links to our offerings.

Office of the Tax Assessor 

The Assessor's Office is closed to the public. 

Important Items:

Elderly and Disabled Homeowners Program - We ask that you do not come to the office at this time please check back the week of the March 30th for an update.  Should the filing requirements or the deadline change we will notify you.  If it does not we will work with on submitting the required documents.

Motor Vehicle - If you need to submit a plate cancellation receipt or proof of disposal please do so by mail or email.

Income and Expense Forms - Forms will be mailed the first week of April at this time there is no change to the filing requirement.  If you need an extension please request it in writing or by email by May 1st 2020.

Veterans - If you are seeking a veterans exemption and need to record your discharge with the Town Clerk please check their website for instructions.  if you are submitting an application to the Assessor’s Office please do so by mail.  If your application requires you to submit income information, please contact the office to make arrangements.

Revaluation - The Town of Fairfield is scheduled for a revaluation effective October 1, 2020.  At this time we a proceeding with the process of gathering and reviewing market data.  We do understand that the current situation with the COVID-19 virus will have an effect on the market and will need to be accounted for.  It is to early in this situation to know the full impact of the virus on the market and revaluation.  Please be patient and check back for future updates.

Office of the Tax Collector 

In an effort to continue to provide services while adhering to social distancing directives, the Tax Collector's Office will have staff available to respond to telephone and email inquiries, and to process online and mailed payments during that time.  Tax bills, tax records, and receipts will be available at no charge via email to all residents, attorneys, and title searchers.

The office is available (M-F 8:30 to 4:30) ONLY by phone at 203-256-3101 and via email  In order to flatten the curve of COVID-19 you are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to avoid visiting the Old Town Hall lobby to make tax payments. 

A payment drop box is available if absolutely necessary and individuals will be allowed access to the lobby on a very limited basis.  Until further notice NO CASH please. You are welcome to get a certified bank check from Peoples Bank and the associated fee will be waived by the bank.
