The Yankee Groundhopper

ISSUE #1 – FEBRUARY 8, 2017

Welcome, footy fans!

First of all, what on Earth is a groundhopper? Well, in the UK a “ground” is basically a stadium, or a place where soccer is played. So a groundhopper is one who hops from ground to ground, a neutral soccer tourist … like me. And since I'm a Yank, well, there you go.

I am Paul, and I will be your guide through these explorations of football culture in the United Kingdom. We will go to games, take tours, learn the language, research tickets and travel tips, and sing songs. And when it’s all said and done, I will write and publish a book, An American’s Guide to Soccer in England. And then I will groundhop some more.

And since we are starting our tour today, I would like to start with one of my favorite subjects: that word, "soccer." I just love it when English people mock me for it, like when I say I am in their country to watch some football, and they practically spit back at me, “Don’t you mean soccer?” And then I say that I use "football" in England and "soccer" in the US, and anyway, I add, “It was you lot that invented the word ‘soccer’!” Most of them – and all of the young ones – don’t know this, but it’s true. And it’s a good place to start sending you to my website, to learn Why do Americans call it soccer?

A Quick Tour of EnglishSoccerGuide.com

This newsletter will mainly be a way of letting you know what I have been up to and sharing some stuff from the website that you might have missed. Essentially you will get to watch me write the book – and, I hope, give me some feedback. So let’s begin with some of the most popular posts on englishsoccerguide.com:

Until Next Time …

That’s more than enough for now. I plan to do these every couple of weeks, and the theme for issue #2 will be “Some English Clubs You Probably Don’t Know About But I Think You Should.”

Video of the Week

Every issue, I will dip into my Youtube channel for a video from my travels. This one is a classic, which caused me to become an honorary Mackem, and also explains why I am wearing a Sunderland scarf in my author photo. What you're looking at is 9,000 Sunderland fans celebrating a last-minute goal in a League Cup semifinal at Old Trafford. Click on the image to see the video, and enjoy!

About the Book Itself

Somewhere in here, I am supposed to be actually writing a book. And, well, I have somewhat started.

Check it out: Special trivia question, for those of you who read this far: Can you name the teams in the photo at the top of this email? (Click on it for a better look) The first person to email me with the right answer gets a prize.

I Can Help You Plan Your Trip!

The book, blog and newsletter are just parts of the whole; I can also help you plan your trip, and I would love to do so!

I have a page of Frequently Asked Questions, but I also offer consulting services; we trade some emails, we jump on the phone, I put together a suggested itinerary along with background info, we talk some more, and I keep you updated as things change.

I have already helped some other folks, and I would love to hear from you.
