Visual Arts Student Association from the University of Alberta | Fine Art Exhibit

Artist Talk: 7:30pm

Vasa is the Visual Arts Association of the University of Alberta. This collection of students function as a bridge between the fine art student life, and the life of a practicing artist. The main purpose of this group is to plan, coordinate and fundraise for the Bachelor of Fine Arts Grad Show in April. This is a huge undertaking that comes down to the dedication of the students.
This year, one of their main goals is to reach beyond the UofA to connect with other organizations, institutions and the general public.

Artist Talk: 7:00pm
The Student Design Association is a collaborative effort that helps to promote and encourage student designers within the community. The SDA strives to link talent within the University of Alberta’s design program to larger causes and exhibitions, creating relationships and opportunities that go beyond the regular curriculum. They have shown work internationally, locally and worked with TEDx Edmonton to create stage designs, collaborated with local design initiatives, and hosted film screenings and public talks.

Of/Off (Course) | Steve de Bruyn

Artist Talk: 7:30pm
Steve deBruyn is an artist living and working in London, Ontario, Canada. His main artistic output consists of large-scale installation art. Usually his work is focused around the culture and esthetics of skateboarding. As a 30-something Canadian, he takes into account his rural upbringing and lack of actual skill on the board itself. He also enjoys the traditional skater ethos of building things for free from whatever is available. He has also been known to create book works, paintings, collages and zines. He frequently collaborates with others. He prefers to exhibit in artist run centers and institutional galleries. He is currently working on a series of solo shows across Canada.

Little Fears | Laura O'Connor

Artist Talk: 7:00pm
Laura O’Conner uses a variety of mediums including but not limited to, photo-illustrations, photography, and fibre art.
“Little Fears” is a personal exploration of the fixations that O’Conner has become the source of her own measures of unease. Ranging from clowns and dentists to detached retinas and hoarding, these pieces represent the personal demons that she has developed through her life experience. She explores the fears that she has conquered but most that are ongoing. By sharing this personal exploration of fear, a light-hearted and positive discourse with the viewer is established, encouraging an empathetic reaction to the recognition of their own anxieties as being significant part of their own emotional maturation.

February is now in full force! The groundhog has seen his shadow and spring is in the air. Cabin fever seems to be setting in so we have structured our programming to get you out of the house to join us at Harcourt for some activities, events and classes!

This year it is Harcourt House’s 25th birthday! In celebration of this milestone we will be hosting our very own Art Market in the gallery on Saturday, April 13th! This market will feature over 20 local artists and designers all under one roof. Announcements on this event and other upcoming events and opportunities will be sent out at the end of February with details of our 2013 Spring & Summer Programming.
