Legislative Updates from TAHU

TAHU’s DATC a Huge Success

Thanks to all the TAHU members and sponsors who attended the sold-out Day at the Capitol in Austin last week. While the legislature is not in session in 2022, it doesn’t mean important work and discussions are not happening. Special thanks to Insurance Commissioner Cassie Brown for her keynote address on regulatory priorities at the Texas Department of Insurance. We also thank Public Insurance Counsel Melissa Hamilton for spending time with our Agency Roundtable over breakfast, helping TAHU members better understand the unique role of the Office of Public Insurance Counsel on behalf of consumers. Finally, we want to thank Dr. Tom Oliverson, chairman of the Texas House Insurance Committee, for his keynote address over lunch where he shared his legislative priorities of the interim ahead of next legislation session in 2023.

Record Number of Texans Signed up for 2022 Affordable Care Act Plans

A record number of Texans signed up for 2022 health coverage through healthcare.gov, the online marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act. According to the latest data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, more than 1.8 million Texans bought health insurance through the ACA, also known as Obamacare. That surpasses the state’s previous 2016 record, when 1.3 million people in Texas signed up for ACA health insurance plans.

TAHUPAC

The Texas Association of Health Underwriters recognized more than a decade ago the need to become more involved in “politics” and formed TAHUPAC to support candidates and members of the Texas Legislature who have philosophies that reflect common sense and an overall understanding of the dynamics of health insurance along with recognizing how TAHU is working to bring more Texans more affordable health insurance plans.

TAHU and its political arm pride themselves in adhering strictly to a legislative program that focuses solely on getting the greatest number of Texans insured with comprehensive health insurance at the lowest possible cost.  Accordingly, TAHU and its political activity unit have maintained a strict policy of non partisanship, understanding that no one political party or person has all the magic answers and that the interest of every citizen of Texas needs to be at the top of the priority list by the Legislature.

TAHUPAC is pleased to support members of the Legislature and candidates who have common sense and an understanding of the many complex, moving parts that exist in the way health care is provided and how it is paid for.

Earning the Registered Employee Benefits Consultant® (REBC®) designation elevates your credibility as a professional. The field of employee benefits continues to evolve rapidly. A year does not go by without new government regulations, new or modified coverages, and new techniques for controlling benefit costs. To best serve their clients, professionals need to have a current understanding of the provisions, advantages, and limitations associated with each type of benefit or program as a method for meeting economic security. The designation program analyzes group benefits with respect to the ACA environment, contract provisions, marketing, underwriting, rate making, plan design, cost containment, and alternative funding methods. The largest portion of this program is devoted to group medical expense plans that are a major concern to employers, as well as to employees. The remainder of course requirements include electives on topics serving various markets based on a broker’s client needs.
