Featured Speaker - March 5
Rev. Richard Gaines
The Caring Word
As many of you know, Rev. W.K. Simmons has announced his retirement from our church staff as our Ministry Associate. In this position through which Bill has served for the past 20 years, Bill has faithfully ministered to our congregation’s homebound and shut-in members. Bill has made innumerable hospital visits, written countless notes and cards, gone on countless occasions to nursing homes, and conversed with hundreds of folks via telephone and face-to-face conversations. In so many ways, Bill has “stayed in touch” with those members of our church family whose health prevents them from being physically present for church services and activities. Bill has been a channel of blessing and grace to so many people both within and beyond our Calvary church family.
This is Bill’s “second retirement.” From September 1, 1965 to April 1, 1993, Bill served Calvary as our Minister of Education and Administration. Bill retired from this full-time ministry position in April of 1993 – a retirement which we recognized with a “Bill Simmons Day” in April of that year. Since this “first retirement,” Bill has faithfully ministered to Calvary’s homebound members (and many others as well) through his service as our Ministry Associate.
As Bill retires from this Ministry Associate position, I want to express my personal thanks to him for his friendship, prayers, and support. Bill and I have ministered together on many occasions throughout the years. We have provided ministerial leadership together at a number of funerals. Bill’s ministry has been a tremendous help to my ministry; Bill’s friendship has been (and is) one of God’s good gifts to me.
We will recognize Bill and his ministry during the 11:00 am service this coming Sunday. Thanks, Bill, for your ministry. You have been a good and faithful servant of God. You have been a blessing to Calvary. Well done!
