Pastor’s Notes for May 23

Preparation for Sunday, May 24

The Lord be with you!

We are preparing for the 7th Sunday after Easter, and I wanted to write to you and make sure that you have all the details on how you may participate.

If you go to the above page, you should be able to see our Livestream on Sunday morning. We’ll be testing and playing around with it the 10 minutes or so beforehand, but Lord willing, we’ll have it all up and going by 9 a.m. You can access it on a phone or tablet or computer. My suggestion is that you use a computer, or even better still is put it up on a bigger screen.

The Service of the Word

This Sunday we will be doing the Service of the Word portion of the Divine Service. That means the confession and absolution, Introit, Kyrie, This is the Feast, Collect, Readings, and the like. We obviously cannot have the Lord’s Supper. But the Word will be proclaimed, God’s praises will be sung, and we will pray to our Lord for His mercy during this time of trial.

You may download and follow along in the bulletin by CLICKING HERE.  There is also a download button on the church website at

The service begins on page 151 of Lutheran Service Book. The readings are as follows:

  • 1st Reading: Acts 1:12–26
  • Epistle: 1 Peter 4:12–19; 5:6–11
  • Gospel: John 17:1–11

  • 728 How Firm a Foundation
  • 539 Christ Is the World’s Redeemer
  • 664 Fight the Good Fight

Our Lord Jesus Is with Us in the Upper Room of His Church on Earth On the night when He was betrayed, our Lord Jesus prayed for His apostles and
His Church on earth. “The hour” had come when the Father would glorify His Son by the cross (John 17:1). Through the shedding of His blood, He would bring
forgiveness for the sins of the world, and in His resurrection and ascension He would unite all Christians with the Father “that they may be one” with God (John
17:11). He manifested His name to the apostles and gave them the words of the Father to speak in His name. The apostolic witness of His cross and resurrection
(Acts 1:21–22) gathers disciples together “with one accord” into the one Body of Christ (Acts 1:14). “Devoting themselves to prayer,” they wait upon the Lord in
“the upper room” (Acts 1:13–14), the place of His Holy Supper. Strengthened by the Gospel, Christians bear the cross of Christ in patience and peace, rejoicing to
share in His suffering, in order that they “may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed” (1 Peter 4:13).
