HIYA's Memory Newsletter

We're Teen Talk's Youth Forum, Harwich Inspired Youth Action (HIYA). We have been working with members of the Harwich Community to gather information about their childhood memories and to see how being a teenager has changed over the years. We will be making these memories into a newsletter to be sent out to local residents.

This edition features Tina Duly, a local community member and was written by HIYA member Emma Davis.

School
Tina Duly attended several schools, including All Saints, St Josephs and St Benedict's. In each of these schools she enjoyed reading, writing, maths and P.E. On the other hand, she did not enjoy when teachers shouted at her.
Outside of School
When she wasn't working, Tina went out with her friends to West Wing, which is now the Vibe Youth Centre. Tina earned £12 at her Saturday job at Parson's, a furniture and home wares shop. Tina couldn't work Sundays as the shops only opened on Saturdays.

Harwich
Tina went to the beach and park with her friends. She also enjoyed going to different shops in Harwich, including two shoe shops, a stationary shop, a china shop and supermarkets. Tina felt very safe in Harwich, and enjoyed going to the carnival and motorbike rally.

Then and Now
Tina thinks modern day is much more different to when she was younger, because computers were only just becoming available. Nowadays everything is automated but Tina says she prefers things the old fashioned way, especially as she prefers to speak to people.
What HIYA Say
HIYA agree that the modern day is different because people nowadays are stuck on phones and computers. Before technology people would go out and socialise more. But HIYA do think that there are benefits to technology as it's quicker to communicate and find answers to the things you don't know.
