HIYA's Latest News

Harwich Inspired Youth Action (HIYA), have gotten off to a fantastic start with their 2015 fundraising campaign having smashed their £300 target by already raising a huge £499.25 through bake sales, bag packing at Morrison's and Asda, and a sponsored sleepover at the Redoubt Fort. This year the group are raising funds to continue to run community events in Harwich and are also hoping to be able to make a donation to the Harwich Christmas lights. HIYA would like to thank everyone who has donated so far. For more information on HIYA's fundraising and to make a donation visit their local giving page here.

Harwich Centre Make Over

We've been working hard to give our Harwich centre an overhaul so that it's a great place for young people to come to. Work started to the main building in 2014 thanks to a grant from Awards for All that allowed us install new toilet and kitchen facilities. We've also been able to carry out much needed redecoration but the transformation doesn't stop there! With grants from Veolia Environmental Trust and the Essex County Council Community Initiatives Fund we are looking forward to transforming our tired workshop into a fantastic new Community Hub. Keep an eye out for more updates in the coming months.

The Diana Awards 2015

Teen Talk's Youth Forum, Harwich Inspired Youth Action (HIYA), have been Presented with the Diana Active Campaigners Award for their work on the Energy Drinks Campaign. The award was set up in memory of Princess Diana’s belief that young people have the power to change the world for the better. Eight members of the group attended an awards evening on 26 February 2015 at New Hall School, Chelmsford. HIYA's campaign aims to raise awareness of the dangers of energy drinks and they have worked with ITV Fixers to create a short video which was shown on ITV Anglia News. The group are now working on material to promote the dangers of energy drinks in schools. The full ITV film can be seen here.

A Taste of Opportunity

Young people from our Life Skills projects were invited to attend a special workshop at The Pier restaurant in Harwich and found out how to turn food they had grown themselves into tasty fresh meals. Staff at the restaurant gave up their time to pass on some of their skills to the youngsters, giving them a taste of the working environment of a busy restaurant and hands-on experience of creating various dishes, including how to make bread, fresh tomato sauce and how to cook fresh fish. They were also able to sample some recipes which had been made with fruit and vegetables they had grown in Teen Talk’s “edible garden,” an initiative made possible thanks to a grant from the Milsom Charitable Fund, which is managed by the independent charitable trust, Essex Community Foundation (ECF). You can read more about the workshop and how Milsons have support Teen Talk here.

High Sheriff's
Awards 2015

We were pleased to see volunteers from the Rotary Club of Harwich & Dovercourt recognised at the High Sheriff's Awards for their work delivering weekly cookery workshops at Teen Talk. Volunteers have worked hard to provide local young people with a fantastic activity that helps develop both skills and confidence. Teen Talk also received £500 towards the much needed update of cookery equipment. You can read more about the awards evening here.
