Welcome to our early summer issue of Your Community, Your Planet!  There's a whole host of activities happening over the school holidays so make sure you check out the Dates for your diary section - and also the office will be closed over the Glasgow Fair weekend!

Our projects and services...
 
SummerProgramme_ImageJoin our Green Team: During July and August we’re looking for people to get active and get involved in tidying up the local area. There are going to be community clean ups on Wednesday mornings and gardening sessions at Kingsway Court Community Garden on a Thursday morning.

We Go Pedal has met the European Cycling Challenge: The We Go Pedal team, as part of Team Glasgow, cycled a total of 1268 kms for May's European Cycling Challenge! The first 3 places were spread evenly between the We Go Pedal partners – Sarah from DRCET/De’ils On Wheels coming 1st, Davy from Whiteinch Bike Club/De’ils On Wheels coming 2nd and Heather from LINKES coming 3rd! Well done to all who took part.

20160520_DoW_McTaggartChq_01_CropA BIG THANKS to McTaggart Construction: De’ils On Wheels recently received a generous donation of £150 plus some PPE  from McTaggart Construction who are building the new properties for Glasgow Housing Association at Kingsway Court.

WH Malcolm lodge appeal: WH Malcolm recently lodged a formal appeal against the decision by Glasgow City Council to refuse planning permission for the proposed gasification plant in South Street. The Reporter will be undertaking a site visit on Wed 7 Jul and a decision is expected by the end of July.

Play on Pedals summer programme: as a local hero organisation we are helping to deliver the Play On Pedals summer programme. There are loads of FREE drop-in sessions happening across the city througout the summer including every other Saturday at Scotstoun Leisure Centre - next session Sat 9 Jul!

Volunteer Week celebrations: to celebrate Volunteer Week 2016 we went on a wee cycle ride to Clydebank and back followed by a celebration lunch at the new cafe at Knightswood Community Centre. A BIG thanks to all of our volunteers!!

We Go Pedal celebrates Bike Week 2016: many thanks to everyone that came along to one of our Bike Breakfasts and the We Go Pedal Family Cycling Extravaganza in Victoria Park as part of Bike Week 2016. The weather stayed dry for all 3 events and a great time was had by all!

20160601_DoW-signage-side01New De'ils on Wheels signage: We recently had new permanent external signage installed at the De’ils On Wheels community bike workshop. The workshop is open Wednesday 11am to 3pm and Thursday 1-5pm. Remember we also accept donations of unwanted bikes too!

Welcome to our new admin officer: we are delighted to welcome Liz Dorward to our team as our new part time admin officer. Liz's post is being funded by the Scottish Government's Strengthening Communites Programme.

BikeAbility success: a big congratulations to all the P6 pupils from Bankhead, Yoker, St Brendan's and Whiteinch primary that successfully completed their BikeAbility level 2 on road cycle training. The training was recently delivered by De'ils On Wheels on behalf of the Council.

Green Gym on summer recess: After a busy few months, the Green Gym are hanging up their gardening gloves and having a well-earned rest during July/August while the summer Green Team keep up the good work. The Green Gym weekly cleanups will resume in September

Other news...

pparking-bigXTake Action on Pavement Parking: Pavement parking is a pain for everyone, it's often unsafe and can cause substantial damage to pavements. Living Streets Scotland are calling on people to contact their MSPs to urge the new Transport Minister, Humza Yousaf, to take action now on dangerous and inconsiderate parking.

New Yoker river crossing exhibition and consultation: Glasgow & Clyde Valley City Deal is proposing a new opening bridge across River Clyde in the Yoker area. The bridge for cars, public transport, cyclists and pedestrians will give currently disengaged communities and businesses better access to jobs, customers, services, facilities and amenities.

subway_mapSubway closures during July: just a wee reminder that in order to complete an important phase of their upgrade program, the Subway is closed for 4 weeks over the summer from 2 to 31 July. Replacement buses are in operation

Quality awards for community groups: Six local community groups in Glasgow are being recognised with a KeyStone quality award for adopting best practice in managing their local facilities.

GCC_EnvTaskForce_ImageEnvironmental Task Force launched: We recently attended the launch of Glasgow City Council’s new Environmental Task Force (ETF) which aims to revolutionise the way the city is maintained and gives the public the opportunity to make its voice heard through Facebook and Twitter. You can also make a difference by becoming a Neighbourhood Improvement Volunteer (NIV) as well!

Area Partnership funding simplified: from August 2016 public, third sector and community groups will find it easier to apply for funding through one of the 21 area partnerships in the city following a review of the Integrated Grant Fund.

Council investment supports active travel : Glasgow City Council is to invest £3 million on cycling, walking and road safety projects across the city including enhancements to bus stops with the provision of high access kerbs in Drumchapel and Knightswood.

Scotstoun Stadium consultation events: two formal public meetings will be held on Tue 26 Jul and Wed 17 Aug 2016 between 7pm and 9pm about the proposed temporary spectator grandstands. The £750,000 work to upgrade the pitch has already started.
 
BikeChain become a Cycle Friendly Employer: Congratulations to BikeChain Glasgow, based on Dumbarton Road in Scotstoun, which recently became a Cycle Friendly Employer. The award promotes cycling in the workplace
