Tides and shoaling can change our underwater landscape, so boaters must keep an eye out for shallow water to avoid running aground. Here are three things to look for:

  • Change in water color (one of many reasons to wear polarized sunglasses!)
  • Birds standing in the water or crab traps showing above the surface
  • Surface irregularities: waves breaking where they shouldn’t or slick areas in otherwise choppy water
