Capt. Terry's Weekly Fishing Report

Fishing remains good for a number of species. Tarpon are in good numbers off Ft. Myers Beach as well as in Pine Island Sound. I have not had much success off of Sanibel or Captiva, but Boca Grande Pass has been loaded with fish. Tarpon seem to prefer big Threadfins, dollar size Blue Crab and Pass Crabs. Mackerel has performed well and jigging has found success in the pass at Boca Grande. However, fishing Boca Grande Pass is not for the ‘faint of heart’ and if one has never experienced it with a professional guide and/or does not know or understand the ‘rules and procedures’ (etiquette); I would not do it until after you have hired someone to take you and ‘teach you the ropes’. Read more.


Governor Scott Signs Ethanol Bill

On Friday, May 31, 2013, Governor Rick Scott signed HB 4001, effectively repealing the Florida Renewable Fuel Standard Act. This comes as very good news to the boating industry, as the original legislation required all gasoline to contain an established percentage of ethanol—ethanol that has proven detrimental in the operation of marine engines.

While the marine industry supports the progress of alternative energy sources, the effort needs to better address the variety of users and impact that alternative energies have on the machinery that uses it. “Signing HB 4001 demonstrates the State’s willingness to support a boating industry that represents a total annual value to the state of $10.35 billion,” says Hans Wilson, President of Southwest Florida Marine Industries Association. The Mohawk Project

A flotilla of boats carrying upwards of 65 divers converged on the USS Mohawk CGC Veterans Memorial Reef this past Saturday to watch the installation of the Mohawk Project art display. 12 pieces by artist Andreas Franke were affixed to the ship with large magnets, and will remain there until being brought back to the surface in mid-September. Read more.

As an avid boater, you are constantly exposed to the intense Florida sun. It is important that you protect your skin with sunscreen when you are out on the water. Make sure you know how to read the sunscreen labels as sunscreen manufacturers now have to comply with new FDA regulations. Read more
