WHAT TRUDEAU’S LIBERALS HAVE PROMISED

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau made many promises during his campaign, and now that his party has won a strong majority in parliament, we trust that he will implement them. Here are some of the most important ones:

• Respecting the public service in line with his September 20 letter to public servants.
• Reversing anti-union bills C-377 and C-525 and restoring collective bargaining to the public service by addressing problematic sections in bills C-4 and C-59.
• Implementing electoral reform within 18 months of assuming power, following recommendations of an all-party Parliamentary committee.
• Immediately launching an inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women.
• Forging a new health accord with the provinces and territories, including a long term agreement on funding.
• Reopening Veterans Affairs offices and improving services to veterans.
• Leading the way with action on climate change and investing in green infrastructure.
• Ending the use of omnibus bills in order to limit debate and avoid parliamentary scrutiny.

There are many more promises that can all be reviewed here.

Let us hope that we will be able to put the past behind us, and ensure that our new government knows that we will hold them accountable and responsible. So far, I am optimistic, and I hope you will be as well!
 

PSAC MEMBERS HELP DEFEAT CONSERVATIVES FROM THE NCR

For months leading up to the election on Monday, PSAC volunteer activists from coast to coast were heavily involved in door-to-door and telephone canvassing in key ridings, talking to fellow members about the Conservative record and the importance of voting for change.

In the National Capital Region, this included targeted work in the then Conservative ridings of Orleans (now won by Liberal Andrew Leslie) and Ottawa West Nepean (now won by Liberal Anita Vandenbeld). It also included last-minute canvassing in Kanata-Carleton in order to help ensure that the Conservative candidate, Walter Pamic, would not win. Pamic, as you may know, is a former chair of the anti-union lobby group Merit of Ontario. And thanks to the helpful efforts of PSAC members, Pamic was also defeated by Liberal Karen McCrimmon!

Of the nine federal ridings on the Ottawa side of the NCR, only one—the Carleton riding held by Pierre Poilievre—remains Conservative. This is a sharp contrast to the situation after the 2011 elections, when six seats were won by the Conservatives.

I remain hopeful and optimistic in facing our upcoming challenges. I am relieved that the sombre days of despair may well be behind us, and that we indeed have a government that will promote hope and dismiss fear. To all PSAC members who helped work for change in this election, we all owe you a vote of thanks and a whole lotta love!

L’AFPC DEMANDE AU NOUVEAU GOUVERNEMENT DE RÉTABLIR LES SERVICES PUBLICS ET LES RELATIONS AVEC LA FONCTION PUBLIQUE

On a réussi! Grâce aux efforts assidus de bon nombre d’entre vous, les Canadiennes et Canadiens ont montré qu’ils en avaient assez des conservateurs en les mettant à la porte le 19 octobre. Le personnel de l’AFPC a très hâte de collaborer avec le nouveau gouvernement pour réparer les dommages infligés à la fonction publique et bâtir un avenir meilleur pour l’ensemble du pays. LES PROMESSES À SURVEILLER

Le chef des libéraux, Justin Trudeau, a fait bien des promesses durant la campagne électorale. Maintenant qu’il détient la majorité des sièges au parlement, nous devons veiller à ce qu’il tienne parole. Voici un aperçu de ses principaux engagements :

• Donner suite à sa lettre du 20 septembre aux fonctionnaires du Canada
• Abroger les projets de loi antisyndicaux C-377 et C-525 et rétablir le droit de la fonction publique de négocier collectivement en modifiant les dispositions problématiques des projets de loi C-4 et C-59
• Procéder à une réforme électorale dans les 18 mois suivant son arrivée au pouvoir, après avoir étudié les recommandations d’un comité parlementaire formé de membres de tous les partis
• Lancer sans délai une enquête publique sur la disparition et l’assassinat de femmes autochtones
• Négocier un nouvel accord sur la santé avec les provinces et les territoires, qui inclura une entente de financement à long terme
• Rouvrir les bureaux d’Anciens Combattants et améliorer les services offerts à nos vétérans
• Faire preuve de leadership en luttant contre les changements climatiques et en investissant dans l’infrastructure verte
• Mettre fin aux projets de loi omnibus qui empêchent les parlementaires d’étudier les propositions et d’en débattre convenablement

Je suis très emballé par ce changement de garde et j’espère que vous l’êtes tout autant! La venue d’un nouveau gouvernement devrait nous permettre de tourner la page, tout en faisant savoir à nos élus que nous surveillerons de près leurs engagements.
 

LA RCN SE DÉBARRASSE DES CONSERVATEURS GRÂCE AUX MEMBRES DE L’AFPC

Au cours des mois qui ont précédé les élections, des bénévoles de l’AFPC ont fait du porte-à-porte et des appels dans les circonscriptions clés d’un bout à l’autre du pays afin de sensibiliser les membres au piètre bilan des conservateurs et à l’importance de les déloger.

Dans la région de la capitale nationale, ces militants se sont attardés à la circonscription d’Orléans (remportée par le libéral Andrew Leslie) et à la circonscription d’Ottawa-Ouest-Nepean (remportée par la libérale Anita Vandenbeld). Ils ont également fait du porte-à-porte au dernier moment dans Kanata-Carleton pour inciter la population locale à déloger le candidat conservateur, Walter Pamic. Comme vous le savez peut-être, M. Pamic est l’ancien président du groupe antisyndical Merit Ontario. Les efforts de nos membres ont été récompensés : M. Pamic a cédé lui aussi sa circonscription à une libérale (Karen McCrimmon).

Des neuf circonscriptions fédérales du côté ontarien de la RCN, seule celle de Pierre Poilievre dans Carleton est restée bleue (wouhou!). Voilà tout un revirement par rapport aux élections de 2011, où les conservateurs avaient raflé six sièges.
