On February 9, 2021, the ExxonMobil Scholarship for Research Award Ceremony was held virtually, in which the six UNAM winners of the 10th edition of the program were acknowledged. Their areas of study are Electronic Electrical Engineering, Biology, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering.
With almost 90 attendees, the ceremony featured speakers from ExxonMobil in Mexico, the Office of Student Exchange and Mobility from UNAM (DGECI); the Office of the Alumni Relations Program from UNAM, the Comission of National Hydrocarbons, and the Secreteriat of Energy.
Current scholar Karen Uxue, as well as two program alumnae, Kelly Hernández (8th Cohort) and Teresita Ramírez (9th Cohort), spoke about what this experience means for them. Following the ceremony, the current fellows had the opportunity to meet virtually with their mentors to kick off the mentorship component.
This program, funded by ExxonMobil and implemented in collaboration with the IIE and UNAM, is part of ExxonMobil's commitment to leading initiatives that promote education in Mexico, supporting UNAM students in STEM fields who are carrying out research projects or theses to graduate. New Hope for Increasing Public Health Resilience in Haiti
I am Jean Max, recently graduated with a PhD in sociology from Florida International University. I was born and raised in Haiti and conducted my dissertation fieldwork there in 2018. I returned to the country as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar from November 2019 to March 2020 when COVID-19 forced me to return to the U.S. My dissertation analyzes the role of NGOs in the post disaster response in Haiti and whether resilience was built into their projects. An important observation that I made during my research in Haiti is that the public health system is extremely vulnerable. Drawing on this observation, I decided to analyze how aid must be delivered to increase resilience of the health care system during the COVID-19 pandemic in order to be able withstand possible future events. I chose to investigate the place of NGOs in this process due to the extraordinary role that they have been playing in almost every aspect of the functioning of the country. Read the full blog here.

Moving From Inclusivity Talk to Equity in Action in International Education Leadership
IIE is partnering with Dickinson College on a series of workshops focused on inclusivity and intercultural competency. Designed to be practical in nature, the Moving From Inclusivity Talk to Equity in Action in International Education Leadership workshop will provide much-needed training opportunities that explore the intersection between intercultural and global learning and diversity, equity and inclusion—work that has been traditionally siloed. The partnership between Dickinson and IIE aims to bridge the gap by bringing practitioners, scholars and learners from across disciplines, backgrounds and cultures together to create new knowledge, best practices and collaborative approaches that grapple with the complexity of building trust and equity across cultures.
The two-day virtual workshop will utilize case studies, small group discussions, and interactive training sessions to help participants develop a deeper understanding of the theories and practice at the intersection of diversity, equity and inclusion and intercultural/global learning, see and begin to break down structural and organizational barriers that impede real change, start to develop a plan for action, and develop a network of other international education leaders. All are encouraged to join this workshop, especially higher education professionals, faculty members, and international educators across sectors, including NGOs, foundations and government agencies from around the world. Note: Registration fee covers up to two people from an institution or organization.
The next workshop will take place on March 25-26, 2021 from 9:00am -12:00 noon ET. IIENetwork members receive a special discounted rate. Learn more and register here.
