June on the Missouri

January 25th, 2023

The Missouri River is legendary even by Montana standards. With trout averaging 18 inches, and fish counts regularly exceeding 6,000 per mile, it’s easy to see why the Missouri is considered one of the greatest fisheries in the Western United States.

June is easily divided into two categories: great fishing, and even better fishing. This is the heart of peak season— where every inch of dirt in Craig, MT is covered by wading boots, drift boat trailer tires and eager anglers.

The first half of June is remarkably like that of late May. Higher flows, longer leaders, double nymphs... and non-stop action! Anglers capitalize on the increased river levels to target trout keyed in on annelid species. Don't shy away from a wireworm and mayfly nymph. It's usually the recipe for doubled over rods, sore arms and stories at the bar! In short, early June is for the angler who wants to bring a lot of trout to the net.

The second half of June is what the Missouri River is all about. This is when the mythical PMD (Pale Morning Dunn) hatch occurs. Anglers transition from a numbers game, to "headhunting" trophy trout of their choice. Fish will aggressively rise in pods as blankets of PMDs rush downstream. This is dry fly fishing at its most pure and gets the blood pumping in even the most serious angler. PMD hatches on the Missouri are a once-in-a-lifetime event that every fly fisherman should experience.

As beautiful as June weather can be (+70°F, big blue skies), it can also bring rain showers. Anglers should be prepared with a quality wading jacket and rain pants, to make sure they're comfortable in all conditions. June is also the ideal month to head down to our private riverfront, and cast dries to rising fish after a wonderful dinner from Chef Patrick.
