Missouri River Ranch Fly Fishing Report

June 23th, 2022

The Missouri River is legendary even by Montana standards. With trout averaging 18 inches, and fish counts regularly exceeding 6,000 per mile, it’s easy to see why the Missouri is considered one of the greatest fisheries in the Western United States.

Fly Fishing Update:
The big question over the last week, has all been about water. The Missouri River peaked at 9,000 CFS, and has stabilized to ~4,500 CFS as of this report. Water temperatures are in the mid-50's. While other rivers in Montana are still experiencing runoff conditions, the Missouri is flowing steady (below historic averages), and fishing incredibly well. The PMD hatch is on. This is perhaps the best dry fly fishing in all of Montana.
PMDs and Caddis continue to be the main course! As water levels have come back down, the river is seemingly boiling, with fish rising in large pods. Anglers can target specific rising fish, or blind cast dries through likely water. Wade fishing directly on MRR's property has yielded some beautiful fish at dusk and dawn.

Nymph fishing continues to be a solid option. With water levels half of what they were last week, wire worms are no longer a "must-have", although they are still producing. Sow bugs, scuds and PMD nymphs are all sure-fire bugs at the moment.

Streamer fishing is not the most effective method this week, although some anglers report success dead-drifting streamers as an attractor pattern.
