Shipmate News 15 June 2016

If you’ve got a boat, then you know the problem, birds constantly leaving their droppings all over your boat. I was told, a long time ago, by an old salt, that there was a simple solution.

He suggested making up a sticky mixture of stale bread, a little bit of milk, a pinch of bird seed and a touch of honey. You work the sticky solution up into a poultice and then roll it into little balls, about the size of meatballs, then carefully take a number of these little balls… And throw them onto the boat next door..!

Ha ha, of course I’m only joking about the solution outlined above, however, the problem is real and what brought it back to mind recently was an email I received about a new solar powered device that claims to keeps birds away by sensing movement and sending out ultrasonic sound waves and activating a strobe light. Does it work? Don’t know, but it’s probably safer than the solution I’ve outlined above. Check it out yourself, you’ll find the details below.

I’m away at the moment, travelling around the Med, the Aegean and the Adriatic, been checking out some fabulous boating destinations, drooling over some sensational superyachts and enjoying some great weather. But thanks to the wonders of modern technology, still managing to stay up to date with all the news from around Australia and you’ll find it all in this edition.

So, as we say each time, sit back, browse through and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water
