Shipmate News

02 November 2016

Heading up this edition of Shipmate News, more sage advice from our resident Marine Solicitor (and ex Shipwright) Marcel Vaarzon-Morel, this time on Mooring your vessel. Who'd have thought there was so much to consider, but there you go, the times sure are a'changin'.

As you'd expect though that's just the beginning, with a report from SOS Marine that they've been nominated for a DAME Award (again) at METSTRADE, the world’s largest marine equipment trade show held in Amsterdam, this time for a world-first marine rescue system utilising unmanned aerial vehicles (Drones) to speed up the process of saving human lives.

And while we're on the subject of overseas, our two largest luxury boat manufacturers have been active OS lately; Maritimo (Offshore Racing) is gearing up to take on the world at the Key West based Superboat World Championships this month with their race boat already on its way to the USA and Riviera held their largest and most fun-filled ever Riviera Rendezvous held in the Americas, (in the San Juan Islands) with beautiful sunny weather and over 150 people and 40 Riviera yachts attending. More details on both those articles below.

Closer to (my) home, news that the Government has approved funding for a dredging study in Hobsons Bay in Williamstown is welcome news for boaters there. Located at the mouth of the Yarra River, Williamstown is a significant maritime precinct with a number of yacht clubs, marinas, boat manufacturing and maintenance facilities, that's been impacted by sediment from the river which, over time, has accumulated to a point where it is impacting on boating access.

Well that's just the the tip of the iceberg in terms of what's been making news this month in the marine world. But don't forget that we post news regularly on our website at www.shipmate.com.au so drop in and take a look. You can also visit us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.

That’s it from me again this time, please sit back, browse through and enjoy the read.

Cheers, see you out on the water

John Zammit
