Business blooms

The sun and all the flowers out in London's gardens and parks have got me thinking about what makes a business bloom.  Whilst I don’t have all the answers, I think it is an interesting topic to debate in my STANDbites intro, and gives the perfect opportunity to talk about some of the ways that Stand Agency is blooming. 

We all know creating a blooming business is not as easy as applying sunshine, water and the occasional bit of plant food, but I think it does boil down to a few key components. 
Bravery – setting up and growing your own business is definitely a test of nerves.

Luck – you can have all the plans in the world, but sometimes success just boils down to some old fashioned luck. 

OutSTANDing talent – everything seems doable with an amazing team of people around you. We have three new team members to introduce you to in this issue alone!  

Outshining competitors – when your business is new, and less established than the agencies you compete against, it is key to punch above your weight.

Making everything matter – when you’re part of a new business and a small team, everything matters.

Smart Meter Central Delivery Body calls for an energy revolution

This week we helped the Smart Meter Central Delivery Body (SMCDB) to launch the results of its major new research into public attitudes towards the energy market. As the organisation's first significant PR push ahead of the national roll-out of smart meters, the research announcement needed to spread far-reaching messages about the need for change in the energy sector.  

So that is exactly what we delivered. After pre-briefings with national media and an intensive media sell-in by the tenacious Stand team, we secured a full day of radio and TV interviews for SMCDB's CEO on launch day, and widespread press coverage across national, regional and online titles. With more than 100 pieces of coverage generated in just four days, word of the UK's forthcoming energy revolution is well and truly spreading.

Welcome Ed Rees
A Masters graduate in media and communications, Ed recently joined the team as a freelancer but he was quickly snapped up as one of Stand's permanent Account Executives. Before joining Stand, Ed built up his experience producing media and technology events for a policy events company; and co-authoring a study for the Department for International Development on media councils. 

Inspiration of the week - Princess Leia doll

Earlier this week a London mother took to Twitter to call for Disney to start making Princess Leia dolls after she had to explain to her daughter that Disney only made dolls of the male Star Wars characters. Initially dismissed by Disney, her campaign went global with #WeWantLeia and the company was forced to agree to bring in the toys. Hats off to this mother for sticking to her guns!
Our favourite story
This week, the power of technology, social media and boredom have combined to make one man a star. If you haven't already seen the video, watching a middle-aged man trapped in a Las Vegas airport alone overnight lip-synching to Celine Dion will make your day. 
Sangria and boats - Moneycorp press trip

The Moneycorp team whisked nine national reporters away to Spain at the end of last month, to showcase all that our foreign exchange client offers – from international payments on hot properties, to great deals on currency. The trip was a big success, and we've since secured some great coverage in the Sunday Telegraph, Sunday Express and The Times among other titles. Just don’t mention the boat! 
World Cup sweepstake

Getting into the swing of the action in Brazil, we've picked our countries out of a hat and the heat in the office is now on. Who will be celebrating glory with the winning team on 13th July? We’ll let you know in the next issue…   

Shawbrook Bank announces impressive results and receives equally impressive media interest 

Last week our client Shawbrook had two exciting announcements to shout about – posting a pre-tax profit of £16.8m after just three years, and acquiring a business called Centric Commercial Finance to expand its lending offer for UK small businesses.
We used the milestones to generate a broad spread of national and trade press coverage about the bank’s growth. Shawbrook’s CEO Richard Pyman was interviewed on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, and the story appeared in several national titles including the Financial Times, The Times, City AM, Daily Telegraph and Reuters. We also generated widespread pick-up in the broker and property investor trade press - key media targets for Shawbrook.

Welcome Beccy Churchill

Beccy recently joined Stand Agency as an Account Manager, bringing some fantastic consumer and social media experience to the Stand team. Previously working across a portfolio of L’Oreal brands in her homeland of New Zealand, Beccy will be applying her knowledge and expertise across Stand’s not-for-profit and corporate client base.
Welcome Katherine Mountain
Katherine, one of our brilliant new Account Executives, is a Politics, Philosophy and Economics graduate from the University of Manchester. She worked part-time at a PR agency throughout her university studies, and after graduation in July 2013 moved to the big smoke to pursue her PR career in the comms hub of the country. After working across a range of consumer PR accounts, Katherine joined Stand to work on clients in the charity and small business sectors.
