Earth Hour Vigil

The Roman Catholic – United Church Dialogue has prepared an ecumenical prayer service to help congregations, parishes, and other groups observe, in prayer and worship.
Please click here for the resources in English and French

Earth Hour stems from a grassroots movement that began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Its goal is to create greater awareness regarding energy consumption and to encourage communities to consider turning off their non-essential lights for one hour, between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Saturday, 25 March. The Earth Hour Vigil can be used flexibly on or around 25 March.

Development and Peace stands in solidarity with refugees

As an organization working for social justice and peace for the last 50 years, Development and Peace-Caritas Canada denounces the Executive Order from President Donald Trump, which suspends the US refugee resettlement program for 120 days, and which bans travel and immigration of citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries for 90 days.

Inspiring women : Gabrielle Lachance

Ms. Lachance was the first - and to this day the only - female Executive Director of Development and Peace. She entered into her position in 1988, and over the next 10 years moved the organization towards becoming one of the most influential in the Church in Canada and society in general.

In her first months as Executive Director, she helped lead several Development and Peace campaigns calling for economic sanctions against South Africa in protest of apartheid. Three months after the liberation of Nelson Mandela in February 1990, she participated in the creation of the Nelson Mandela Fund, alongside Mandela himself, who had become leader of the African National Congress (ANC), and Joe Clark, who at the time was serving as Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs. The fund was created to support educational resources in South Africa.

Prayer for International Women's Day

God our Creator, we joyfully celebrate all women today; and we particularly give thanks for the wisdom, strength, courage and skill of the women in our own lives. Put a steadfast spirit within each of us Lord, as we continue to strive for an equal world in which all people are valued and respected.
