The next Roving Refinery event is being planned for August at an exciting new downtown restaurant, so stay tuned for details.
What is the Roving Refinery you ask?
The Roving Refinery is a DRA members' social event where you will get a chance to meet other downtown residents and local merchants in your neighbourhood. Do you have any suggestions for the next Roving Refinery? We're always looking for more great places to mingle and learn about so send us an email <email@example.com
Historic Tour of Government Street: Chatham Street to Bastion Square
A big thanks to local historian, tour guide and author, John Adams who gave a group of DRA members and guests a tour along Government Street on Saturday 9th June. As most were long-time Victoria residents, John really dug deep and shared some great history of the area.
FACT: Did you know that in May 1915, following the sinking of the Lusitania, there were riots in Victoria and the mayor at the time literally read the Riot Act; the first and only time a mayor has done so in Victoria’s history?
That's just one gem that John shared with us on the 90-minute tour. As we walked down Government Street, John wove one tale into the next, depicting a picture of Victoria at a very different time in history – scandal, murder, intrigue and opium.
We look forward to another great tour at a later date!
Gardens & Green Spaces
Our next installment of our Container Gardening Workshop is being planned for late summer in preparation for winter gardening.

Johnson Street Bridge – Bridge Approaches
The Community Workshop on public realm elements related to the Johnson Street Bridge Replacement Project was conducted in Saturday June 9, 2012 at the Ocean Point. More than 130 people attended the workshop. Here are just a few comments we heard from resident members that we brought forward to City staff (more comments are on our website
The trailhead of the multi-use trail on the downtown side needs to be designed to accommodate the flow of bike traffic as it transitions from the trail to the roadways both north and south.
The triangular green space in the middle of the roadways would be a great location for an iconic piece of art. Something large, interactive that is designed and planned for the context of the given space.
The previous plans showed a small boulevard of trees dividing the Johnson St east/westbound lanes of traffic on the east side of the bridge. The current proposal shows 6 unbroken lanes of traffic, plus two bike lanes, it would be desirable to reinstate that boulevard to soften the viewscape and break up a potentially vast expanse of concrete as well as add essential traffic calming influence especially for fast moving eastbound vehicles coming off the bridge.
Pathways, Landscaping, and Public Spaces
The Open House and Information Session on public realm elements related to the Johnson Street Bridge Replacement Project has been scheduled for July.

Where: Swan’s Hotel, Collard Room
