Thank You

From Yasir Makki

Thank youThanks to those of you who donated money to help Yasir Makki get to Mennonite World Conference. (Yasir spoke about his work in the Sudan during our July 13 worship service.) "I can't thank you enough; this has been such a wonderful experience," Yasir reports. He was able to participate in a number of workshops led by David Shenk, who is well known in Mennonite circles for his work on Christian/Muslim relations. In fact, he led one of David's workshops on 2 hours' notice when David had a conflict!

From Genie Kehr
Thank you for all your prayers and visits while in the hospital and health care. I am now home and recuperating after 3 months there.

The summer of grief

This has been an incredibly hard post to write. I teach about social identity and oppression, and I spend a fair amount of time reading, writing and talking about racism. It is something I care deeply about, and it is something that impacts my life and the lives of many people that I love. But I know that in order to be “hearable” I need to foster a somewhat dispassionate tone. I need to distance myself from my passion and my own pain. I need to take care to not put people on the defensive, not to offend. This summer, my capacity to do that has worn so very, very thin. Learn more.

AMBS Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary

Saint John's Bible exhibit

AMBS will host an exhibit of 20 prints from the Saint John's Bible from September 1 to 18. The prints are from pages of the hand-lettered, hand-illustrated Saint John's Bible, which merges ancient techniques of calligraphy and illumination with a current ecumenical Christian approach to Scripture. AMBS invites all who are in our area or who are traveling nearby to stop in to see the exhibit and ponder anew the message in the Scriptures so exquisitely reproduced. Learn more about the St. John's Bible.

Be angry, but do not sin

The sun has not yet gone down on this day, and my soul cries out with a cleansing anger, born of grief! An intense grief that will not give up on hope," Sara Wenger Shenk says at the beginning of her blog post, Be angry, but do not sin. Join in her lament and prayer for patience and humility.

Community Announcements

The Window Open for First Friday

The Window's kitchen will be open for August's First Friday. Friday's meal runs from 4:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.or until the food runs out. We will feature pulled pork sandwich, coleslaw, chips and brownies and ice cream. This event is hosted by Clinton Frame Share and Care Sunday class. The suggested donation is $8.00.

MCC: Fabric for Comforter Tops

Wrap the world in warmth! Precision sewers are needed to piece and sew comforter tops for the upcoming MCC Comforter Bash on October 23-24 at Pleasant View Mennonite Church in Goshen. These handmade comforters will provide not only warmth but also a tangible message to people that their needs are not forgotten. Free fabric is available from Nadine Zook Miller, Material Resource Coordinator at The Depot. Contact her 574-534-4071. Completed comforter tops are needed by October 1.

Menno-Hof Singspiration

Come and enjoy a cappella singing of familiar hymns on the Menno-Hof lawn in the traditions of the Amish Church, Amish Mennonite Church, Conservative Mennonite Church and Mennonite Church USA. There will be ice cream and pretzels and more singing inside following the worship service. Rain location: Farmstead Inn pavilion, Shipshewana (just north of Menno-Hof) Sunday, September 13, 2015 at 5 p.m. Bring lawn chairs for seating.

The Window

We have two needs we would like to share with your congregation; the cargo van that was used for donation pickups is “officially” out of commission and our building needs the A/C replaced. We were given a quote of $5,371.00 for the A/C and we expect the cargo van to cost around $10,000.00. However, we are open to a vehicle donation as long as it is a reliable 2005 or newer cargo van. Many thanks for all that you do to help The Window fulfill its mission to serve those in need within the Goshen Community!

A life-changing MEDA experience in Nicaragua

On October 3-10, 2015, you can see the impact MEDA has on communities in rural Nicaragua, as well as meet employees and clients of MiCredito, a MEDA-founded microfinance institution helping entrepreneurs every day. The tour is designed with you in mind: a seven-day trip that will change the way you see the world and meet the people changed by MEDA’s business-minded approach to poverty. More information is available online or contact tour leader Bethany Nussbaum or (330)749-1847.

MCC Run for Relief

Register online for the 2015 Run for Relief.  The 5K run and 2K walk are September 26, 8 a.m. at the Elkhart County Fairgrounds.

Pray for all the students and their teachers as they prepare to go back to school.  Pray that they will all have a smooth transition.
