Ballot Affirmation

Due to the resignations of two commission members, we will be bringing the following individuals to the congregation for affirmation on a ballot on
October 5.
Elizabeth Miller Richer       Spiritual Leadership Team (1 year term)
Becca  Smucker                 Worship Commission (1 year term)
~ From the Leadership Discernment Team

Thank You GIHN Volunteers

Thank youA big thank you to all the many volunteers who helped host our GIHN guests this week. We continue to be so grateful for the ongoing commitment you have in serving people in our community who find themselves homeless. We had a great week.

Parables Worship Team

Parables worship teamParables, a worship ensemble from Goshen College, combines music, original drama and personal stories to create an engaging worship experience designed to inspire, comfort and challenge.  The program for 2014-15 is developed by the eight student members, with direction and leadership from Professor of Music Dr. Deb Brubaker. Learn more. This coming Sunday, the Parables will worship with us here at Berkey.

A New Sanctuary Roof

New Sanctuary RoofAs you will recall, this summer's storm damaged the roof over our sanctuary. Using insurance money and money already set aside in our budget for roof repairs, the trustees, along with the Stewardship and Finance Commission, are planning to hire Bulldog Construction and Master Steel Roofing to install a 24-gauge steel roof over the sanctuary portion of our building. The price will be $16,403. Because the current asphalt roof is nearing the end of its life, we want to install an entirely new roof on the sanctuary. And because steel lasts for at least 50 years and can be recycled, the plan is to install steel instead of asphalt. The color of the new roof is called Cityscape, which is a medium gray. If you have questions or concerns about this plan, please contact Greg Smucker, congregational chairperson, by Friday, September 26.

Two Nurseries

Childcare during worshipOur congregation is blessed with many infants and toddlers--so many, in fact, that the Christian Education Commission has decided we need to provide two nurseries during the worship service instead of one. Beginning this Sunday, September 21, the nursery for children under 2 years of age will continue in the room called Cherub Corner. A new nursery for children aged 2 and 3 will be held during worship in the MYF room. (Toys will be stored in the large cabinet on the left as you enter the room.) All adults who have attended for at least a year will automatically participate in nursery staffing unless they specifically opt out by contacting Priscillah Metekai in the church office.

Thank You

Thank you - boxtops for educationThank you to all of you for the great response we have had in the last year for "labels for education" & "box top for education". On Sept 19, 2014 I mailed 1016 "Box Top for education and 408 "labels for education" to Hope Mission School for them to buy school supplies. We are still collecting for next year.  ~ Genie Kehr

From the Deacons and Pastors

congregation sharing timeHere at Berkey, sharing time is an important way in which we connect with each other. It is a highly valued part of our congregational life by many people. Over the last number of years, the deacons (Caregiving Commission) have talked about sharing time: what its purpose is, how to improve it, how to best lead it. Two years ago, we surveyed the congregation to receive your input on sharing time, and to experiment with different ways of leading sharing time. Learn more.

College Meals

college mealsOver the years, Berkey has been a wonderful, welcoming church home for many college/young adult students. One of the highlights for the students is having a meal each Sunday after church. This allows them to get to know our church family in a more informal setting and learn to know a wider range of people. You don’t need to make anything fancy – just a simple meal of food you enjoy making. You can host in your home or at the church, using the church kitchen. You may sign up individually, with someone else or as a small group. You can go online directly to sign up for a meal (username: students and password: bamf) or contact Ruth Roth.

Small Groups

small groupsSmall groups are an important part of our life together as a congregation. They help us to deepen our relationships with each other and with God. If you are currently not in a small group, and would like to join one, or if you are interested in changing small groups, you can fill this form. If you have questions, please speak to one of the Small Group Co-ordinating Committee members: Stephanie Wieand, Ron Good, or Marilyn Rudy-Froese. Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale

"Patient Vigor" for Interesting Times

"Patient vigor," Sara Wenger Shenk writes, "means a willingness to listen calmly to each other, to the Scriptures, and to God’s Spirit." "We recognize that as a church, we’ve allowed competing claims about what the Bible says to divide rather than unite us," she notes, suggesting that patience, practiced vigorously can help us live and minister through the tensions. Learn more.

Getting to Know

Fellowship Commission

Susan Garboden

  Getting to Know
My family moved to Berne IN, where Steve lived, when I was 12 years old. Steve and I sat in alphabetical order for the next six years of school. After Steve and I were married in 1972, we moved to a trailer, 48 feet by 8 feet, in the Goshen College Trailer Court.  I worked as a nurse while Steve finished his studies in Math at GC.  I like to say that I graduated from the GC Trailer Court in December 1973! Steve and I have four adult children and three grandchildren. I love being a grandma. Elijah attends church here with us quite often. He and I spend time together outdoors all the year round. My other two grandchildren live near Manchester, England, where I love to visit. I have too many hobbies, but favorites are gardening (flowers and woody ornamentals) and spending outdoor time  with my dog, Gracie. I have been a member of Berkey since 1980. Both the church and I have evolved in many ways since then. I am thankful to be a part of a church where I feel accepted, respected and useful. God's love has come to me in countless ways through the people at Berkey. Currently, I am helping the fellowship commission by keeping the kitchen stocked. I also volunteer with IHN, take care of a small patch of the landscaping, and serve as a substitute teacher for children's Sunday School. Sometimes, I  tackle random, spur-of -the-moment needs that I see or hear about.

Whether you are new or a charter member, we are continually learning to know each other and we want to get to know you more. It can be very simple, your name, what you do for a living and what you are interested in. You can view our newsletter archive for some examples. Interested in being featured? Let us know!

We will no longer be printing and distributing calendars each month.  They are however, available for download.
