Advent Giving Project

booksThe College Board estimates that the cost of textbooks and supplies for undergraduate students for 2016-17 at $1100 to $1200. Many minority students at Goshen College do not have the funds to absorb this expense. For our Advent 2016 giving project, the Mission Commission will collect money to assist Goshen College minority students who are unable to purchase required textbooks. To contribute funds for this cause please designate your giving in the Berkey offering to “textbooks for students.”

Berkey Popcorn

cornLady finger popcorn was raised in the church gardens this summer. Lady finger popcorn is the smallest popcorn available and it is hull less. There is popcorn for sale on the table in the fellowship hall. This would make nice gifts. All sales go to the Model School fund in Berkey's budget.

Class on Spiritual Discernment

directionIn December, January, and February, Dan Schrock is offering a class on spiritual discernment. At many moments in life we face decisions. Now that college is over, which job should I pursue? Which of the two graduate schools that I’m thinking about fits better with God’s call? My spouse and I have been married for a while; is this the right time to try to have children? My current job no longer seems like a good fit, so should I make a change? Now that I’m retired, I spend a lot of time sitting around; what good things can I do for others? Has the time come for me to sell my house and move to a retirement community? Decisions like these invite us to practice spiritual discernment, which is the art of identifying God’s call and sifting out the things that work against God’s call.

This class will focus on helping you make big and small decisions like these. The class will be most useful if you bring a real decision that you’re currently facing. If not, you can come with a simple wish to learn more about spiritual discernment. We'll be using Living into the Answers: A Workbook for Personal Spiritual Discernment, by Valerie Isenhower and Judith Todd.

Prayer
Please contact the office by noon on Thursday with prayer requests.

From IN-MI Mennonite Conference:
Pray for Parkview Mennonite Church, Kokomo, IN. They give thanks for a unanimous vote to tweak their structure, continue with the pastoral team of Mary Jo VanSickel and Grace Whitehead, and have Russell Jensen as their congregational coach. God continues to show them the way as they pray for his guidance.

Shalom Mennonite Church, Indianapolis, IN (Gary Martin, transitional pastor; Brian Bither, pastor). They praise God for the Holy Spirit’s guidance of congregational conversations this fall which are leading them to greater clarity of mission. Please pray for continued Holy Spirit guidance as they gather in retreat on November 5, for Christian fellowship with a focus on helping each other clarify individual callings, and on November 13, as they discuss a proposed mission statement.

From Mennonite Education Agency:
Pray for Eastern Mennonite University as preparations are made for the School for Leadership Training, January 16-18, 2017. May those who attend hear God’s call to deepen relationships through “neighboring” rather than “othering.”

From Mennonite Mission Network:
Petrus and Yuliana Handoyo and their two sons are sent to Cambodia by an Indonesian Mennonite mission agency and Mennonite Mission Network. Pray for Petrus as he teaches religion and ethics in two universities, and for Yuliana as she directs an education ministry for children living on the edge of the city.
