Sermon Series Begins on Intercessory Prayer

Note from DanThis Sunday the 17th I’m beginning a 6-week series of sermons on intercessory prayer. To my chagrin, I realized earlier this summer that during my years at Berkey I’ve never done much with intercessory prayer. I’ve talked often about other types of prayer, but not intercession.

Intercession happens when we pray for someone or something else. (When we pray for ourselves, it’s called petition, or petitionary prayer.) Obviously, intercession is different than thanksgiving, lament, praise and adoration. Each of these voices of prayer has a crucial role in worship and in the life of faith.

Numerous texts in the Bible either are themselves intercessory prayers or tell stories about people who engage in intercession. For this series I’ve selected 6 texts that take different approaches to intercession.
  • July 17:  Genesis 18:16-33
  • July 24:  Numbers 14:1-4, 11-23
  • July 31:  Daniel 10:2-6, 11-14, 18-21
  • August 7:  Ephesians 6:10-18
  • August 14:  Luke 8:1-8 (this one is technically petition)
  • August 21:  Romans 8:18-27
So far I’ve written about half the sermons in this series, and have found that the biblical texts I’m working with are challenging me to rethink a few things about prayer. Maybe they’ll challenge you as well.

Fall College Assistance

college fundThis fall our congregation will have 9 young people attending Mennonite colleges and seminaries. Each student is eligible for assistance of $500 for the fall semester from our college matching fund. Giving to this fund is financially prudent because the colleges match all contributions dollar for dollar—plus you get a tax deduction on your contribution. Very few investments double your money like this does. Please mark your contribution for the college fund and place it in the offering. Thank you.

AMBS Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary

Matt Yeater can relate to Bible stories in which God moves in seemingly impossible ways. His own story is one of them. Blinded in a meth lab explosion when he was 20 and imprisoned on multiple occasions, Matt doesn’t fit the stereotype of a seminary student. However, he not only graduated May 21 with a Master of Divinity from AMBS, but also was named a recipient of the 2016 Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award from the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) for his work in making biblical languages accessible to blind people. You are invited to read his story online.

Check out this blog series featuring people, congregations and organizations in Mennonite Church USA who are working with veterans who have experienced the trauma of war. Ken Landis shares about SHELTER44, a ministry of Watertown Mennonite Church and New York Mennonite Conference with a goal of connecting people from nearby Fort Drum with the Mennonite community. Nancy Shebeneck of Emmanuel Mennonite Church in Gainesville, Florida, writes about what returning veterans need from the church. A six-week Sunday school curriculum from the Peace and Justice Support Network, a partnership of Mennonite Mission Network and Mennonite Church USA, explores how the church can play a part in veterans’ healing journeys.
