Berkey Announcements

Good Friday/Easter Sunday

The Easter SundayGood Friday Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on March 25. The evening will start with foot washing and communion in the fellowship hall then continue with a Taize style worship service in the sanctuary. Then, on Easter, everyone is invited to breakfast at 9:00 a.m. Worship will begin at 10:00 a.m. Nurture classes will not be meeting.

Service Project

Service ProjectThe Mission Commission has scheduled a service project at the Window on Thursday, April 7, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. to sort through donations and do other tasks to assist the staff. There is a sign up sheet posted on the bulletin board by the mailboxes if you plan to volunteer. We will need to inform the Window staff how many to expect no later than April 3. All are welcome to help with this project.

News from Mike Genau

Mike GenauA new letter from Mike Genau is now posted on the Mission Bulletin Board. Mike is doing service work with Jubilee Partners in Comer, Georgia. In this letter, Mike shares some of his experiences working with people in the forest, playing checkers, and welcoming new people to the country.

Thank You to the MYF

ThanksA big “shout out” thank you to the four MYF sponsors and the MYF’ers who helped pick up sticks and branches on the church property, house property, and the three acre field. This was a big help and really appreciated.

Garden Plots

gardenPlans are underway for this year's garden plots. A plot is 12’ x 25’.  Manure is put on in the fall, the soil has been tested and treated, water is available, and the area is fenced in. Garden tools are kept in the barn and are available for you to use. If you would like one or more plots, email Lowell Nafziger or call him at (574) 533-3537.  A donation of $5.00 per plot to Lowell is suggested to help with manure and other expenses.Join us!

Berkey House for Rent

Berkey HouseThe red house beside the church will be available to rent in April. It has 4 bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms. The cost is $750 per month. Gas and electric are the responsibility of the tenant. We are offering a one-year lease with month-to-month rental after the first year. If you're interested, please contact Lowell Nafziger, 574-536-5983.

Conference Letter

Conference LetterAre you concerned about the tenor of the current presidential elections? The leaders of Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference have prepared a pastoral letter to others in the conference, calling us to "act like Jesus during this election cycle" in a climate of "overt racial, ethnic, and religious intimidation." Cards for Jered

Notes for JeredDuring this Lenten and Easter season, we would like to send notes to Jered Liechty who is currently incarcerated at the Westville Correctional Facility. If you would like to show care or encouragement, please consider writing a few sentences to him. If you are not sure what to write, perhaps you could share a favorite bible verse or a poem. There are bright colored note cards on the table by the mailboxes for you to use. Place your card in the Office Manager's mailbox; the office will mail the cards weekly.

Stephen Ministry Training Continues:  Suicide

stephen ministriesThis coming week the Stephen Ministry training class will be considering the subject of "Helping Suicidal Persons Get the Help they Need". In this presentation they will be working with a questionnaire that provides much significant information about suicide and shows how to minister to suicidal people. Those who are participating in Stephen Ministry training are excited about what they are learning and about the ministries they are anticipating. We look forward to the work of our Stephen Ministers among us.

Bethany Christian Schools invites applications for the position of evening custodian beginning June 2016. Successful applicants will have the aptitude to work independently, perform minor repairs on equipment, and supervise student cleaning crews during the summer. The position is approximately three-quarters time and eligible for partial benefits. Applications are being accepted until the position has been filled. Goshen College Goshen College

​The Rieth Chamber Series on Saturday, April 2, will be featuring Baroque Identity, 7:30 p.m., Rieth Recital Hall. Tickets are $10 for general admission and are available online. The newly formed ensemble, Baroque Identity, brings together three internationally acclaimed specialists in Historical Performance: Jaap ter Linden baroque cellist/gambist, Lisa Goode Crawford, harpsichord, and Kathie Stewart, baroque flute/recorder. Representing the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in Amsterdam, Oberlin Conservatory, and Apollo’s Fire, the members hold a significant resumé of critically-acclaimed performances, recordings, and publications. Together, these three musicians present an engaging program of music of the Baroque on period instruments, including works by Telemann, Couperin, and J. S. Bach.

AMBS Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary

You are invited to a recital for voice and piano, Love: Sacred and Profane. Louise Hawkley, soprano, will be singing songs by Liszt, Bach, Michael Head and others; lyrics by Rilke, Victor Hugo, Tennyson and others. The recital will be held at the Chapel of the Sermon on the Mount, Sunday April 3, 4:00-4:45 p.m. Light refreshments afterward. Admission is free.

Community Announcements

Empty Bowl Project

The 16th annual Empty Bowl Project to benefit Goshen Interfaith Hospitality Network will be Saturday, March 26, 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Mill Race Center Farmer's Market. The cost is $15 which includes a handmade bowl, delicious soup of your choice, bread and beverage. These are provided by area restaurants and guild members.

Finance and Stewardship Workshop

College Mennonite Church will be hosting the final workshop in a series on finance and stewardship led by Everence staff. On March 30 the theme will be Living More with Less, led by Kim Kelsey. The class will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Amigo Centre Fundraising Banquet

You are cordially invited to meet the new director of Amigo Centre, Matt Ropp, at a fundraising banquet this coming Thursday, March 31 at 6:00 p.m. at Yellow Creek Mennonite Church. The event is free but you will be invited to contribute. Please RSVP to Amigo Centre by calling 269-651-2811.

First Friday Meal to Benefit The Window

You are invited to The Window for a First Friday meal, April 1, 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. The Maples at Waterford Crossing will be serving bourbon glazed beef brisket sandwich with horseradish cream sauce, roasted potatoes, coleslaw, cheesecake, coffee and water. All proceeds will benefit The Window.

Hospice Volunteers

A training opportunity is available in Goshen for people interested in becoming Hospice volunteers. As the hospice population continues to grow, volunteers who have been trained are greatly needed. A volunteer may provide respite for the family so they can continue with as much of their normal routine as possible. This can be done as straightforward as volunteers spending time sitting with a patient or as involved as helping someone with a life review. The next training session will be April 12-28 on the Goshen Hospital campus. The 18 hours of training will be conducted in six 3-hour sessions on successive Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-9:00 p.m. See the bulletin board by the mailboxes for more details.

Mennonite Healthcare Annual Gathering

Healthcare professionals, students, retirees:  Register by April 15 for the Mennonite Healthcare Fellowship (MHF) 2016 Annual Gathering, June 17-19, 2016 at the YMCA of the Rockies, Estes Park, Colorado. The theme is "Wholeness and Holiness: Views from the Mountaintop."  Topics include the spirituality of illness, international healthcare, end of life ethics, public health, trauma, and gun violence. The weekend includes vibrant worship, stimulating speakers, and a variety of workshops. This event is open to anyone interested, especially persons from medical, mental health, therapy, and chaplaincy professions, including students and retirees. Center for Healing & Hope Fundraiser

You are invited to hear Jep Hostetler, author of The Joy Factor, speak at a fundraiser for the Center for Healing & Hope. Hostetler uses humor, stories, and a touch of magic to encourage his listeners. Bread and Chocolate will provide tasty desserts, including options for those with dietary restrictions. This dessert reception will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 15, at the Bread and Chocolate Ballroom in Goshen. Tickets are $50. To order tickets, call 574-534-4744, ext. 201, or purchase them online. All proceeds go to providing urgent medical care and advocacy for the uninsured.

MDS Volunteers Needed

Ten volunteers are needed to help with the Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) project in Detroit, April 18-22. This project includes clean-up and reconstruction in response to massive flooding in 2014 that damaged the homes of 128,000 families. It is a bi-national MDS effort (both Canadian and American). If you are interested in responding, contact Volunteer Placement Coordinator Alicia Hurst .

The Amazing Elkhart Race

Church Community Services (CCS) will be hosting the 5th annual Amazing Elkhart Race on April 30. Their goal is to bring together community members, businesses, churches, etc. and highlight the goodness of Elkhart – as well as raise funds for CCS. You are invited to start a friendly competition here at Berkey by gathering 1 or 2 teams (4 persons each) to race in this completing wacky mental and physically challenging race. Mission Network requests prayer for Dan and Kathryn Smith Derksen and their sons, Jacob and John-Clair, as they begin an assignment in South Africa, working with Oscar Siwali, director of Southern Africa Development and Reconstruction Agency. Pray for their adjustment and their work with peace education and conflict transformation.
