Worship Series on the Senses

Worship SeriesDuring the month of May, the Worship Commission has arranged for a special series on the five senses. Our overall theme is “Awaken us, God, to who we are!” Although our five senses are integral parts of our embodied human experience, we aren't always aware of the role these senses play in our life with God. Our goal in this series is to explore some of the ways the senses enhance our relationship with God.
  • May 1 - Touching
  • May 8 - Hearing
  • May 15 - Seeing
  • May 22 - Baptism at the pond
  • May 29 - Smelling and Tasting

Emmaus Program

Bethany Christian High School’s performing arts troupe, Emmaus, will presents its final public program of the 2016 season this Sunday, May 15, at 6:00 p.m. in Bethany’s chapel. Shared in area elementary schools and other public venues, this year’s show is entitled Not An Island. As the troupe reflected on the world’s current problems and needs, then looked at how that boils down for small communities and children, they saw loneliness and exclusion as issues to be addressed. Filled with fun, energetic, familiar stories (such as Otis and Winnie the Pooh) and songs (such as I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad and You’ve Got a Friend in Me), Not An Island tackles issues that are relevant to today’s children and grown-ups alike.

Host Families Needed

Bethany Christian Schools is in need of host families for serving international students who would like to attend Bethany. This opportunity to gain cross cultural experience in your own home often becomes a rewarding experience for the host family, as well as a blessing to the student. Families receive monetary compensation. One school year commitment. For more information, contact admissions director Sarah Kraybill Lind , 534-2567.

Community Announcements

Mental Health Month

The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Quoting Rosalynn Carter, "People with mental problems are our neighbors. They are members of our congregations, members of our families; they are everywhere in this country. If we ignore their cries for help, we will be continuing to participate in the anguish from which those cries for help come. Because it will not go away, and because of our spiritual commitments, we are compelled to take action." See the bulletin board by the mailboxes for more information and a list of resources.

Auction Volunteers

The Faithful Giving New and Used Auction at the Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale needs your help. This auction was reintroduced last year and brought in over $15,000.00 for MCC. The Relief Sale board is looking for volunteers to help with this year’s auction and with help soliciting for items. Please contact Deanna King at 574-875-8987 if you are interested.

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

This Saturday, May 14, is Letter Carriers’ Stamp out Hunger Food Drive. This is the time of year that food banks prepare for summer challenges when children are not in school. In the United States, more than one in seven American households (49 million individuals, including 12 million children) struggle to have enough to eat. On Saturday letter carriers will gather non-perishable foods that are placed by your mailbox. The food from this food drive is given to local organizations like the Window and Church Community Services. Your contribution does make a difference in the lives of our neighbors.

The Dixie Swim Club

Elkhart Civic Theater presents The Dixie Swim Club, featuring Berkey member, Laura Mosier. This comedy will be at the Bristol Opera House on May 13-15; 20-22. For tickets go online or call 574-848-4116.

Bristol St., Elkhart. Tickets are $40 for individuals and $75 for couples. To purchase tickets, visit their website.

Dan's Fishfry

MDC Goldenrod's Hacienda Fiesta

MDC Goldenrod invites you to join them for great food and a fun time of socializing on Tuesday, May 24, at the Goshen Hacienda Restaurant. 20% of their sales that day will go to support MDC Goldenrod’s mission of serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as long as the purchase is accompanied by a token. See the bulletin board by the mailboxes for Hacienda tokens. As an alternative, you can buy gift cards which can be used to eat whenever you want. To order gift cards, contact the Goldenrod office by email or call 533-9720 by Thursday, May 19 (checks made payable to MDC Goldenrod). Please do not pass out tokens at the restaurant as this will void the donation agreement with Hacienda.

Love is a Verb: Planning for Orlando 2017, to be held July 4–8, is underway! We invite your prayers for the Convention Planning staff members and the Worship Planning Committee as they make decisions that will give shape to this gathering.

Laura Schlabach of Mennonite Mission Network has served in Mongolia for more than two decades in the areas of finance, administration, and worker support. Pray for her as she divides her time between the main office in the capital city and her travel to be a spokesperson for the needs of more remote areas.

Pray for Hopewell Mennonite Church, Kouts, IN (Joel Short, pastor). They give praise to God for new and continuing music leadership, for growth among young adults and for a good preschool year.  Please pray for several youth being baptized on May 15.  "God is good, all the time, and HOPE is what we DO."
