From the Deacons and Pastors

congregation sharing timeHere at Berkey, sharing time is an important way in which we connect with each other. It is a highly valued part of our congregational life by many people. Over the last number of years, the deacons (Caregiving Commission) have talked about sharing time: what its purpose is, how to improve it, how to best lead it. Two years ago, we surveyed the congregation to receive your input on sharing time, and to experiment with different ways of leading sharing time. Learn more.

College Meals

college mealsOver the years, Berkey has been a wonderful, welcoming church home for many college/young adult students. One of the highlights for the students is having a meal each Sunday after church. This allows them to get to know our church family in a more informal setting and learn to know a wider range of people. You don’t need to make anything fancy – just a simple meal of food you enjoy making. You can host in your home or at the church, using the church kitchen. You may sign up individually, with someone else or as a small group. You can go online directly to sign up for a meal (username: students and password: bamf) or contact Ruth Roth.

Small Groups

small groupsSmall groups are an important part of our life together as a congregation. They help us to deepen our relationships with each other and with God. If you are currently not in a small group, and would like to join one, or if you are interested in changing small groups, you can fill this form. If you have questions, please speak to one of the Small Group Co-ordinating Committee members: Stephanie Wieand, Ron Good, or Marilyn Rudy-Froese.

Getting to Know

Mission Commission

Getting to Know - James Yoder

James Yoder

I am the 5th child from a family of nine children, a preacher’s kid, who grew up in rural Iowa.  Since leaving Iowa some of the places I have called home include Ohio, Kansas, St. Louis Missouri, Kentucky and the Netherlands. Trish and I first met in 1981 after I hitchhiked to Goshen and we have been married for 31 years. This past summer our daughter, Lynelle, married Josh Hofer and they now live in Minneapolis. Joel is a senior at Goshen College and we enjoy attending his soccer matches. My hobbies include gardening, reading and listening to podcast that focus on mindfulness, jogging, genealogical research and raising mealworms for the bluebirds that nest in our backyard. For the past 21 years I have been employed as a school social worker for a special education cooperative in St. Joseph County Michigan.

Whether you are new or a charter member, we are continually learning to know each other and we want to get to know you more. It can be very simple, your name, what you do for a living and what you are interested in. You can view our newsletter archive for some examples. Interested in being featured? Let us know!

We will no longer be printing and distributing calendars each month.  They are however, available for download.

PrayerPlease contact the office by 9:00 a.m. Thursday with prayer requests.

Today on Peace Sunday, Mennonite Mission Network joins Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite World Conference in “praying for the peace of Jerusalem.” May we all find inspiration to respond to conflict in ways that do not perpetuate violence.
Justin Shenk and Valerie Showalter, who serve through Mennonite Mission Network, are helping the Round Chapel, a congregation in London, England, find new ways of engaging the community – a weekly parent-toddler time, and intergenerational sessions of exploring arts and cooking. Pray that people will be drawn to Jesus through these activities.
