Fall College Assistance
Our fall goal for the college and seminary assistance fund is $4,500, which will benefit 9 young people from Berkey. To date we've received $4,195, leaving $305 to meet our goal. This fund is one of the few ways you can double your investment--our colleges and seminaries match all contributions dollar for dollar. In addition, you get a tax deduction on your contribution. Please mark your contribution for the "college fund" and place it in the offering. Thank you.
The June minutes from the Spiritual Leadership Team (SLT) are now available on our website for you to read. You will find the minutes under the Resource tab. Use the same password that you use for the online directory.
New Custodian Hired
For many years Berkey has benefited from the custodial services of Tim and Tracy Thorne, along with occasional help from their children, Hamilton, Natalie, and Abraham. Since Tracy and Tim are moving to Ft. Wayne, the Stewardship and Finance Commission has hired Grant Miller as our new custodian. Grant will begin studying at AMBS this fall, working toward a master's degree. Welcome, Grant!
My Coins Count
As you exit the sanctuary after worship, look for the MCC collection jars for your coins (or bills). My Coins Count
, formerly known as Penny Power,
will be collected for the 2016 Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale coming up on September 23 & 24 to support the relief, development and peace work of the Mennonite Central Committee. The focus again this year will be on providing water resources to people around the world. This work involves drilling wells, sand dams, cisterns, and more - all to provide better access to those who don't have clean water for their critical daily sustenance.
GIHN Appreciation Event
Volunteer Appreciation Event for all Goshen Interfaith Hospitality Network (GIHN) Volunteers will be Sunday, August 14, 3:00-5:00 p.m., at St. Mark's Church. You do not need an invitation this year.
After a potluck on August 21, we'll have a congregational meeting with only three agenda items. Since Greg Smucker needs to be out of town that weekend, Anita Mounsithiraj will lead the meeting.
Approve minutes of the May 15 meeting.
Discuss and vote on the budget for 2016-17.
Discuss and vote on the following motion from the SLT: "The Spiritual Leadership Team moves that we change term lengths for the SLT and the commissions from three years to two years, with a possibility of serving up to three consecutive terms. People who are currently serving three year terms will continue to do so. These changes will begin in the 2017-18 church year for all new persons who join the SLT or a commission." Approving this motion will require changes to Berkey's Constitution. To see how the Constitution would change, click here

Berkey has agreed for American Red Cross to use our church building as a temporary shelter in case of disaster in the community. If you would like to form a group of Berkey folks to receive training to aid in such a crisis, contact the American Red Cross of Northern Indiana at 574-234-0292. Flyers about Red Cross are on the literature rack. You may also visit their website

Pastoral Sabbatical Coverage
The Spiritual Leadership Team (SLT) has approved a sabbatical for Marilyn Rudy-Froese from September 19, 2016 to January 2, 2017. To work with Dan Schrock during her sabbatical, the SLT has hired Ron Guengerich, who recently retired as one of the pastors at Silverwood Mennonite Church here in Goshen. Ron will work on a half-time basis. He will preach once a month and work with the Caregiving and Worship Commissions, along with doing some pastoral care. This arrangement means that for the fall our congregation will have less pastoral time available than we normally have had (equivalent to one-half time less). We'll introduce Ron more fully in a future issue of the newsletter.
Series on Intercessory Prayer
This is the fifth Sunday on a 6-week series of sermons on intercessory prayer. For this series, Dan Schrock has selected texts that take different approaches to intercession.
- August 14: Luke 8:1-8 (this one is technically petition)
- August 21: Romans 8:18-27
You are invited to read the sermons on the Berkey website
as they become available.
