And thanks to the sponsors John and Lois Mast, Dan Nafziger and Denise Risser for your part in helping this retreat happen! Thank you, also, to Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship for your part in making it possible for your outstanding youth group to attend and for praying and expecting that God was at work in their lives during the weekend and now! Volunteering at the Depot

MCCThe Mission Commission and the MYF have scheduled a service project doing some volunteer work at The Depot on Wednesday evening, January 29, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.  This project, involving both our youth and adults, will help to further the mission outreach of The Depot and MCC. There will be a signup sheet in the Fellowship area for those who want to participate.  The Depot staff will plan work activities based on the number of persons who signed up.  We hope to have a good turnout for this worthwhile activity.

Soup, Bread and a Show

Soup and BreadOn February 5th we will have a soup and bread meal beginning at 6:00 p.m. with a magic show following at 6:45 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited. There will be childcare for the very young but this show is geared toward the whole family. Let us know you are coming!Tentatively, on February 26, we will be having another soup and bread meal and this event will include a Talent Show hosted by our very own Allan Rudy-Froese. All those with special talents to share are invited to contact Allan to sign up. Again, childcare is provided for the very young but all children are invited to participate. Look for a sign up sheet for both these events and plan to come.

Care Packages for College Students

Care PackageFollowing the meal and show on Wednesday, February 5, the MYF will be assembling care packages for college students - both regular attenders and those away at college. You are encouraged to bring items for the care packages: granola bars, raisins, candy, snacks, school supplies, etc. Homemade goodies are especially appreciated!  Bring non-perishable items to church before the 5th or drop off fresh items that day.

Celebrating the Gift

Sexuality SeriesTalking about our sexuality can stir up experiences and feelings that are painful and troubling. This is normal. So we encourage you to do what you need to do to care for yourself:  talk to one of the pastors or a trusted friend, excuse yourself from parts of the service or Christian education sessions that you find disturbing or painful, or visit another church on a particular Sunday. A week from this Sunday, on February 2, our topic will be sex and sexuality in marriage. If this will make you uncomfortable, you can certainly attend another church that day. Please note that this series will include both Worship and Christian Education time for Junior Youth - Adults. The configuration of MYF and adult Christian education classes will change from Sunday to Sunday. Members of the Sexuality Planning Committee will generally lead the classes. In future weeks the classes will sometimes be intergenerational so we can hear each other across the generations. View the brochure.

Support for Model School

Model StudentsFollowing up on our last member's meeting and preliminary work by Lowell Nafziger, the Mission Commission is exploring ways we as a church can support staff and students at Model School.  A list of ideas is on the mission bulletin board or you can view it online.  Please let one of the Mission Commission members know if you are interested in being part of a group to organize this effort, if you have additional ideas or are willing to help implement some of these ideas. The Mission Commission: Curt Wenger, Lori Good, Clare Krabill, Pete Graber and Marilyn Rudy-Froese

Greg Smucker

Greg Smucker

My name is Greg Smucker. My wife, Barb, and I have 3 children. Leslee and her husband Michael live in Tampa, FL. Simon and his wife Becca live in Goshen (and attend Berkey Ave). Lana will graduate from Bethany Christian High School and plans to attend Goshen College next year. I work for Repcolite Paints located in Holland, MI. I manage Snyder Paints here in Goshen which is 1 of 7 company owned stores. I also spend time working for the corporate office which includes developing on-line data-base applications for use in our lab and manufacturing. When I am not working, I enjoy playing trumpet. I also enjoy the challenge of composing music for worship.

BONUS TRIVIA: Martin Luther King, Jr. slept in our house!  Barb and I purchased our house on 8th Street from Willard and Verna Smith in 1983.  Martin Luther King Jr. came to Goshen on January 14, 1960 to speak at the Goshen College Lecture-Music Series. The title of his lecture was "The Future of Integration." Since Willard was the history professor at Goshen College, the Smiths were asked to be overnight hosts for Dr. King.
