Update from the Third Pastor Search Committee

PrayerThe process to hire a replacement for Lois Mast has begun. This 1/3-time job is being called the Third Pastor position and will focus on Faith Formation, particularly as it relates to youth and young adults. This is a slight expansion on the job description Lois had. The search committee includes Randy Horst (chair), Roy Bergey, Abbe Buller, Lindsay Rheinheimer, and Deb Williams. We have almost completed our Congregational Information Form, and once it is completed it will be submitted to the Indiana-Michigan Conference to be officially posted as a job. If anyone in the congregation is interested in applying for this position, they must fill out and file a Ministerial Leadership Information (MLI) form with Mennonite Church USA (that process begins by visiting Read the job description to learn more or contact Randy or any other member of the search committee.

Support for Model School

Support for Model SchoolThis past winter BAMF decided to have a mission project in our own community.  It was decided to adopt the staff at Model School and do things for them. On Tuesday, August 5 we served lunch to 60 of them.  There is a thank you note on the bulletin board from the teachers and staff.  It was especially good to do it before school started as the staff was able to catch up with what others had been doing over the summer.  On Wednesday, August 6, Faith Lutheran Church provided a lunch for them as well.  This school year we will be taking turns with Faith Lutheran Church in providing a snack, flowers, notes, etc. once a month for the staff at Model School. We did this February through May and the staff was so grateful for the snacks and thoughtful, caring notes that were with them. If you would like to help with this, please let Curt Wenger, Beth Berry, Patsy Sherer, Marilyn Rudy-Frose, Diane or Lowell Nafziger know.

Online Photo Directory Status Report

Directory updateWe have recently been experiencing some difficulties with our online directory.  Additionally, many people have begun to wonder about a print version of the directory. In light of this, we will be putting together a printable PDF version of the directory which will also be available once it is completed. We will send a preliminary draft out to the church mailing list in order to get the most up to date information.  We hope to get a draft for review to you this coming week. In the meantime, if you need a particular person's contact information, please contact the church office.

Penny Power

Penny PowerWe will begin our Penny Power drive this Sunday, August 17. The children will be collecting coins for the project after the church service each Sunday until the Relief Sale the last weekend of September. Pennies are great, but remember you are not limited to pennies! Spare change of quarters and silver dollars adds up much more quickly than pennies. Dollar bills are acceptable, too! Last year the sale had its best year ever with Penny Power raising $138,335 to be used to provide clean, safe and accessible water to people around the world through Mennonite Central Committee and its partners.

Fall College Assistance

Mennonite CollegesThis fall our congregation will have 14 young people attending Mennonite colleges. Each student is eligible for assistance of $500 for the fall semester from our college matching fund. Giving to this fund is financially prudent because the colleges match all contributions dollar for dollar—plus you get a tax deduction on your contribution. Very few investments double your money like this does. Please mark your contribution for the college fund and place it in the offering. Thank you.

Lost and Found

lost and foundHave you been missing one of your items lately? You might want to check it out on the lost and found shelf. It is located on the top of the north coat rack just off of the main entrance.  Everything that is not picked up will be taken to the depot at the end of each month.

Marriage Retreat: a Bicycle Built for Two

Come on out on September 12 at 7:00 p.m., to Waterford Mennonite Church and catch the show. Tickets are $10 per person.  Additionally, the marriage retreat will continue on Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. until noon.  There will be light refreshments at 9:45 a.m. and childcare will be provided. Prayer and Fasting

August 17 to 24 is an international week of Prayer and Fasting directed towards the violence in Nigeria.  On April 14, 2014, nearly 300 schoolgirls were abducted in Nigeria by the Boko Haram. While 2/3rds of the girls were from the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria, we are well aware that the world concern goes far beyond the Brethren.  An example is the “Save our Girls” emphasis in the Peace Booth at the Elkhart County Fair.   You are receiving this invitation as a way to keep our focus on this atrocity by responding as Christians through prayer and fasting. Consider ending your fast with a Prayer and Fasting worship at one of the area Churches of the Brethren. For more information, contact Anika Roth at Goshen City Church of the Brethren.

Laverne Nafziger
Laverne Nafziger

I was born in India to Missionary Parents and came to the States at 15.  I attended Hesston Academy and College, LaJunta School of Nursing and Goshen College.  Eldon and I met at LaJunta, while he was in VS at the Hospital.  We farmed in Hopedale for 50 years before moving to Goshen in 2004. We have 4 children, the youngest is Tim who lives in Goshen.  Tim and his Family attended Berkey Ave until they were invited to work with the Spanish Ministry at North Goshen. Eldon died of a massive stroke in Oct 2011.  We have 12 grandchildren, two of the granddaughters graduated from Goshen College, and now grandson Dean is a Jr at Goshen College. Berkey Ave has been a good choice for us.  I enjoy teaching Sunday School. The Lunch Bunch has been an inspiration to me. Knitting, crafts and reading are hobbies I enjoy. Knitting has me involved with a group at Greencroft on Monday afternoons and the Prayer Shawl Small Group here at Berkey.  Lexi, my Mentee and her sister Sayde come on Sunday mornings with me.

Whether you are new or a charter member, we are continually learning to know each other and we want to get to know you more. It can be very simple, your name, what you do for a living and what you are interested in. You can view our newsletter archive for some examples. Interested in being featured? Let us know!

Meredith's quilted elephant

Did you know that this quilted elephant was made by Meredith Yoder? It was displayed at the Elkhart county fair (home and family building) this year, and won a purple ribbon. Her inspiration came from the many elephants they saw on African safari.  The color palette was adapted from the colorful clothing the Africans wear and the bead work represents their lovely jewelry and skilled craftsmanship.  Her "elegant elephant " gave her joy as she worked through the steps of designing her.  It also allowed her to give thanks for the many African friends they have made over the years.  She hopes she brings joy to you as she shares her with you.
