Update on Our Playground and Parking Lot Project

UpdateWe regret to report that our playground and parking lot project will not happen this fall, due to three interwoven factors beyond our control. First, the city requires that we submit a detailed, engineered site plan before they will approve the project.
Second, this site plan can only be drawn up by qualified engineers, but engineers in our area have been swamped with a backlog of construction projects. The earliest any engineer could visit our land as a first step in preparing a site plan for the city was last week.
The third factor is that the city board which approves construction projects like ours only meets once a month, near the end of the month. However the proper paperwork, including the engineered site plan, must be submitted to the board one month before the meeting at which we seek approval.
In other words, the submission deadline in September for plans to be considered at the October board meeting has already passed (because no engineer was available to finish the paperwork in time). We intend to submit our paperwork in late October in order to be approved in late November.
But by late November, the weather will be too cold to cure concrete properly, which means we will have to wait until this coming spring.
We’re sorry for this disappointing news. So many of you have given generously to this project. The Capital Campaign Committee has worked hard. Lowell Nafziger and Greg Smucker have diligently stayed in touch with architectural and engineering firms, and with city officials. Thank you for your generous financial support, and now for your patience as we await the coming of spring.

Third Pastor Search

Pastoral SearchThe search committee for our new third Pastor position has been created and we've begun the process of filling out the informational forms used by Indiana-Michigan Conference to invite applications. The committee is made up of Richard Aguirre (SLT representative) Abbe Buller, Randy Horst (chair), Priscillah Metekai, and Deb Williams. A progress chart is posted in the fellowship area to help let the congregation know where we are at in the process.

Any congregational members interested in applying should contact Doug Kaufman (doug@im.mennonite.net) ASAP at the IN-MI Conference for further information about forms that need to be submitted to them by all candidates.

Your money will be used to fund water projects, including building wells for students in Chad and Mozambique, improving sanitation for students in Uganda and helping get clean water to Syrian refugee families in Iraq. Your money offers more than just life-giving water, it shows you care and offers hope to families struggling with challenging circumstances. Thank you for your generosity and creativity in sharing the love of Christ around the world through Mennonite Central Committee and My Coins Count. - Les Gustafson-Zook, MyCC Coordinator, Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale.

Meals for Students

College MealsOver the years Berkey has been a wonderful, welcoming church home for many college/young adult students. One of the highlights for the students is having a meal each Sunday after church. This allows them to get to know our church family in a more informal setting and learn to know a wider range of people. You don’t need to make anything fancy – just a simple meal of food you enjoy making. You can host in your home or at the church, using the church kitchen. You may sign up individually, with someone else or as a small group. Follow this link; username: students, password: bamf. For more information, contact Ruth Roth. Thank you so much for your meals and friendship to our students!

Now their grandson Paul and his spouse Rebecca have followed in their footsteps and are serving as MCC Representatives in Haiti. Read more about this family's journey of service.

Prayer
Please contact the office by noon on Thursday with prayer requests.

From Mennonite Education Agency:
At Bluffton University this fall, we pray that God would grant traveling mercies to
students traveling to athletic events, home for fall break this weekend and to student
teaching placements and internships.

Tomorrow the Hesston College student body will come together to celebrate the many
different ethnicities and backgrounds in the annual Cultures Fair. Pray for a greater
understanding and appreciation for diversity at Hesston College to emerge from this time
together.

From Mennonite Mission Network:
Tomorrow is Indigenous Peoples Day. Pray for North American Mennonites of European descent to confess their complicity in the oppression of the original inhabitants of this continent. Pray also for Mennonite Mission Network personnel who support marginalized people groups to reclaim their land, their language, and their dignity.

From IN - MI Mennonite Conference:
Pray for IN-MI Mennonite Women as they hold their annual retreat at Amigo Centre, October 7-9. Pray for the committee members:  Jeanette Amstutz, president; Heidi McHugh, vice-president; Carolyn Lichti, secretary, Joy Detweiler, treasurer. The roles of vice-president, secretary and treasurer need to be filled in January 2017. Please pray for women to fill these positions.

Pray for Kalamazoo Fellowship, Kalamazoo, MI (Will Fitzgerald, pastor). They are continually grateful for the grace and goodness God has shown to them. They ask for prayer for their children and extended members who want to come to know Jesus or know him better. Many in the congregation have demanding jobs and they pray that they can be faithful in them, and faithful to one another in that busyness. The congregation expects to begin some deep discussions on human sexuality in the new year, and will need lots of grace and strength for that.
