Advent Giving Project

booksThe College Board estimates that the cost of textbooks and supplies for undergraduate students for 2016-17 at $1100 to $1200. Many minority students at Goshen College do not have the funds to absorb this expense. For our Advent 2016 giving project, the Mission Commission will collect money to assist Goshen College minority students who are unable to purchase required textbooks. To contribute funds for this cause please designate your giving in the Berkey offering to “textbooks for students.”

No GIHN at Berkey

gihnWe received word from Phil Keller at GIHN center that there won’t be any guests next week. One family found a rental house this week and another is leaving on Friday. He said families this close to Christmas often get invited to stay with  family members or friends. So we will not be hosting GIHN guests next week. Thank you to all of you for being willing to serve in this way. Enjoy this extra time to be with your families and friends or help someone in some other way.

Robert Beutler knows all too well what it means to be persistent. After hearing of a Syrian refugee family’s arrival in his hometown of Enkenbach-Alsenborn, he made a point of contacting the family to welcome them. It was only after the third attempt, however, that Mr. Beutler finally caught the entire family at home. Read more.

Soccer Night Out With Femi

Femi Hollinger-Janzen, a collegiate national champion and professional soccer player from Goshen, will speak at a 6:00 p.m. dinner on Thursday, December 29, at Waterford Mennonite Church. Following the meal, Femi will share stories—from his soccer career and his amazing story of faith and perseverance in overcoming a crippling leg deformity as a child in Benin to fulfilling his dream of playing soccer professionally—and answer questions from the audience. The main course of this family-style meal will be Groundnut (Peanut) Stew—a Hollinger-Janzen family favorite from their days in Benin. Hot dogs and other foods will also be available. The event is sponsored by Waterford Mennonite Church youth as a fundraiser for their activities such as attending the Mennonite Church youth convention this summer. Advance reservations for the dinner are $20 for grade 7 and older, $10 for elementary school students, and free for preschoolers. Reserve your spot by December 27 by filling out this google form or call the church at 533-5642. You may pay at the door with advance registration or show up the day of the meal for $25. Gates for the meal will open at 5:30 p.m., with opportunities for autographs. An autographed jersey will be auctioned as well.

MDC Goldenrod is excited to announce a new craft program for community members. This program seeks to provide opportunities for members to create craft items with the option to sell what they’ve made. The goal is to provide a safe environment for each individual to explore their creative abilities, practice and enhance technical skills, and receive rewards for their hard work through sales. They want to provide a sense of community for these members while they work side by side and contribute to the broader community.
They are looking to start up the program by January with their first project of string beading. They are in search of a venue to help get this program off the ground. They would need a room with table space for up to 15 people available for us for 3-6 hours a day, 4 days a week, through the months of January and February.
In addition to their search for a space, MDC Goldenrod welcomes donations for purchasing beading supplies. For more information, questions, or if you are a beading enthusiast and would like to volunteer, contact Craft Shop Coordinator, Amanda Hunsberger, 574-533-9720.
