Congregational Meal

saladEveryone is invited stay for a congregational meal after the nurture hour this Sunday. For the meal please bring a main dish and a salad or dessert to share as well as your own table service. Guests and college students are warmly invited to stay for the meal

Congregational Meeting

Fellowship HallOur next congregational meeting will happen this Sunday, November 20, following the meal. The meeting's agenda includes:

1.  Approve minutes of the August meeting.
2.  Receive a financial update from the Stewardship and Finance Commission.
3.  Discuss (and perhaps approve) the child abuse policy and the guidelines for dealing with alleged sexual harassment. Read Berkey's recommended policies and forms here: 4.  Update from the SLT on conversations about growth.
5.  SLT's clarification on the term limits proposal passed at the August congregational meeting:
Beginning September 1, 2017, all new terms for SLT and commission members will last for 2 years, whether the person is starting a term in that position for the first, second, or third time.  A person may serve up to three 2-year terms (i.e., 6 years) before ending their service in that role.
Persons who accepted a 3-year term beginning either on 9-1-2015 or on 9-1-2016 may continue that 3-year term until it expires, even if it means they will serve 7, 8, or 9 continuous years in that role.
If persons complete a term of service on 8-31-2017 and have served 5 years in that role, they may be eligible to begin a 1-year term on 9-1-2017 if the Leadership Discernment Team needs a 1-year term to balance term lengths within a commission.
If persons complete a term of service on 8-31-2017 and have served 6 years in that role, they will have reached their limit for serving in that role.

Update on Helping Latino Immigrants

Richard Aguirre noteThanks to the Berkey Avenue family for your tremendous response to my call last Sunday for support for Latino immigrant students and their families. They and other vulnerable people need our prayers now more than ever. I'll have sign-up sheets back in church on Sunday, so people can offer assistance, such as providing provide food, meals, transportation and donations to pay legal expenses, when such help needed (probably in December and January). For more information, email Richard Aguirre or call (574) 535-7571.

Class on Spiritual Discernment

directionIn December, January, and February, Dan Schrock is offering a class on spiritual discernment. At many moments in life we face decisions. Now that college is over, which job should I pursue? Which of the two graduate schools that I’m thinking about fits better with God’s call? My spouse and I have been married for a while; is this the right time to try to have children? My current job no longer seems like a good fit, so should I make a change? Now that I’m retired, I spend a lot of time sitting around; what good things can I do for others? Has the time come for me to sell my house and move to a retirement community? Decisions like these invite us to practice spiritual discernment, which is the art of identifying God’s call and sifting out the things that work against God’s call.

This class will focus on helping you make big and small decisions like these. The class will be most useful if you bring a real decision that you’re currently facing. If not, you can come with a simple wish to learn more about spiritual discernment. We'll be using Living into the Answers: A Workbook for Personal Spiritual Discernment, by Valerie Isenhower and Judith Todd.

Bolivian Learning Tour

BoliviaThe Mission Commission is organizing a 10 day MCC learning tour to Bolivia. The possible dates for the tour are either the end of April/beginning of May or the last part of June. This tour will be able to accommodate 8 to 12 people and may include people from Waterford Mennonite Church. Becca Smucker provides the following tour description:
The tour will include getting to know parts of Eastern and Western Bolivia. This would mean starting in Santa Cruz, where we have various partners and where we are located at the MCC office, and then ending in Cochabamba, a city in Western Bolivia where we have various service workers and partners as well. This would give a broader look into MCC´s work throughout Bolivia as well as allow you to experience cultural differences within the country.
If you are interested in participating in the tour planning, or in going on the tour please contact James Yoder.

Christmas Eve. Service

candlesOur Christmas worship service this year will be Saturday, December 24 at 7:00 p.m. There will not be a worship service on Sunday, Christmas day.

New to Our LIbrary

libraryChristian's Hope:  Return to Northkill, book 3, by Ervin R. Stutzman features the story of the younger brother of Joseph Hochstetler and the son of Jacob, whom readers have come to love in the first two books in this series.  Based on actual events and written by a descendant of the Hochstetler family, Christian's Hope brings the sweeping epic of the series to a soul-stirring end.

Kisses from Katie:  A Story of Relentless Love and Redemption, by Katie Davis is a true story of a young Catholic girl who followed her heart to care for orphans living in extreme poverty in Uganda. Through Katie's life, we're reminded how God can use ordinary people to do extraordinary things for Him. This book is from the New York Times best seller list.

For His Sake:  Stories of Barbara Graber Schrag Unger, by Wilbert R. Shenk contains tales of a Swiss Anabaptist family, 1815 - 1911, written simply in the living colors of drama and suspense. The stories are a great fit for several audiences: for schoolchildren absorbing Anabaptist history for the first time, for family devotions or bedtime reading, for children’s time during Sunday morning worship.

Overplayed:  A Parent's Guide to Sanity in the World of Youth Sports, by David Kind and Margot Starbuck is for parents of kids involved in the abundance of activities our culture offers our kids, with helpful suggestions as to how we can, once again, make youth sports about the kids.

The Journey of a Lifetime, "One Step at a Time," by Ervin J. Schwartz.  is the life story of an 89 year old man from Nappanee, IN who was an accomplished artist, musician and Christian family man. The book is edited by Dr. Miraim Hochstetler, Ed.D.  This book was given to John Schrock by the author's family after his death who he got to know through his work with hospice.

Sara Wenger Shenk writes in her most recent blog post, A Cold and Broken Hallelujah, "If the church can’t unite against hatred and bullying, the church isn’t worth its salt. The U.S. nation is divided. The church is divided. The gospel of Jesus Christ is not divided. The gospel says without equivocation: what you did to the least of these, you did to me." Read more.
