GU CDC is pleased to announce the inaugural recipients of the Pillar of the Community award. With this award Germantown United acknowledges those among us who have significantly contributed to the betterment of our community.  As dedicated and steadfast champions for Germantown the award recipients embody the values of Germantown United.

Betty is the Owner and President of Turner Consulting and Community Services LLC (2008) and she has severs Greene Street Friends School, Board member on the School Committee (2015).

Ruth Seeley hails from Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the United Kingdom. After studying drama and teaching at Rose Buford College near London, Ruth taught for 18 months at Kaimosi Girls High School, a Quaker-run school in Kenya.  Ruth met her future husband, Bob Seeley, on a Quaker project in the Soviet Union in 1968. They were married in December 1968 and settled in Germantown in 1970. Before retiring in 2009, Ruth worked as administrator at the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom; as Assistant to the Director of the Friends Council on Education, and as Assistant to the Director of the American Friends Service Committee. Ruth’s involvement with Friends of Vernon Park (FOVP) began when she volunteered for a gardening project shortly after she retired. When the Tookany-Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership proposed a rain garden for Vernon Park, she represented FOVP at stakeholders meetings and at workdays during construction. The rain garden project was a turning point for the park. It led indirectly to the revival of FOVP. As FOVP president, Ruth has helped transform a small group of dedicated supporters into a major force for positive change in the park.
