WHAT'S GOING ON?
There's so much going on in the world (::understatement::) but all over people are organizing from the ground-up to resist and build the world we do want. What I've been up to? Stepping into my role doing Communications at the New Economy Coalitionhas had me learning about visionary organizing happening all over America; to cultural activism in my hometown of Staten Island throughLa Isla Bonita Summer Festivalwhich has me plugged in on the ground;to supporting #DIASPORADICAL projects rebalancing the world like the hip-hop compilation archiving and empowering Black Cuban voices #AfroRazones, to the Afro-Latino Festival of NYC(who through collective effort, successfully crowdfunded the festival this year!), to rebel EDM from Nani Castle and the soulful sounds of Dayme Arocena - who is on tour this summer and just released a new video. There is much work to be done - locally, nationally and globally - and through that work, may we never lose sight of the power of music and arts to transform how we heal each other and ourselves. As always, I love hearing how you are and what you're up to, so please say hi! ~nati
Have You Been To Staten Island?
From Staten Island to California, Brooklyn via the Diaspora, seasoned local Staten Island rock scenesters to teens, afrobeat to poetry, illuminated solar art pieces, a community promenade and gallery, not to mention a skatepark, public pool and bridge views - La Isla Bonita Summer Festival returns to Faber Park in Port Richmond, Staten Island for the 3rd year, growing with each installment and transforming like our communities. Let us learn, let us revel, let us rise together and let us fly. RSVP HERE!
Fuerza With Nani Castle & Tony Quattro
"Club producer Tony Quattro is back with a brand new single, 'Fuerza,' aided by Nani Castle. There's a whole bunch of influences at play in the pair's contribution to OWSLA's HOWSLA compilation; Latin music, house, even a hint of dembow all bubble up to the surface. Appropriately enough, given the dire straits the world is in, the track carries a message of 'empowerment and standing up for yourself; preparing your mind and body for a fight of any kind, personal or political.'" With 150,000+ plays on Soundcloud, Fuerza's a contender for song of the summer! More via COMPLEX.
Video: Daymé Arocena - Ellegua
The single’s Havana-shot music video, which splits scenes of Daymé singing to the backdrop of her city while a dancer beautifully explores an act of spiritual communication with Eleggua, Santería’s god of the crossroads. “Eleggua begins and finishes everything in Santeria,” Daymé writes to OkayAfrica. “He is the God of the 21 Ways and for us it’s really important to always take the right path. That is why [I] started this album playing for him, ’cause we are looking for the key of the best “way.” In Cuba we call this kind of rhythm “Afro”—we adopted many traditions from Africa that are now part of the folklore and culture of Cuba.” Watch OkayAfrica's premiere of the new music video for “Eleggua,” directed by Savanah Leaf, above and catch Daymé on her upcoming US tour dates including NYC's Highline Ballroom on June 17th. AfroRazones is Out Now!
"An inheritor of the golden era of conscious Afro-Cuban rap (1995-2004), AfroRazones also aligns itself with what has been called The New Afro-Cuban Movement; the recent presence of several antiracist activists and organisations in Cuba’s public sphere after recent understanding of the delicate future of race relations in post-socialist Cuba." - Pablo D. Herrera Veitia. Read up on OkayAfrica, Remezcla and Trackrecord -- then make sure to support these artists and pick up the project on Apple, Spotify or Tidal.
