FastEddy®️ is Free! Download NCAR's open-source, microscale model


FastEddy is NCAR's new, GPU-based large-eddy simulation model that has the potential to enable real-time simulations of the urban environment. A limited-capability beta release version of FastEddy is now available to try out! Download it yourself and let us know what you think.

Director of UCAR Government Relations

This position is the primary organizational contact and internal advisor for legislative and public policy matters. The director fosters relationships with key members of government and Earth system science affiliate groups; ensures appropriate NCAR/UCAR participation in government forums; works with policymakers, leaders of government, and affiliate industry councils to influence public policy; monitors government initiatives; and advocates for specific plans to advance NCAR/UCAR’s interests in Earth system science. APPLY
 

Director of UCAR's Center for Ocean Leadership (COL)

COL manages, coordinates, and facilitates research and education programs in the areas of ocean exploration and observing. COL has a proven track record of shaping the future of ocean science and technology through discovery, understanding, and action. APPLY
 

Director of NCAR's Climate and Global Dynamics Lab (CGD)  

CGD conducts directed research that discovers the key processes in each component of the Earth’s climate system and the interactions among them; represents this understanding in models and thereby provides a basis for the prediction of climate; and applies this understanding and these models to scientific problems of societal relevance. Director of NCAR's Earth Observing Lab (EOL) 

EOL provides state-of-the-art atmospheric observing systems, leadership, and scientific expertise to enable the university-based research community to advance climate, weather, and related Earth system science. EOL manages the majority of the NSF Lower Atmosphere Observing Facilities and deploys them in support of observational field campaigns for researchers from universities, government agencies, and NCAR and in support of education. Requests for large-scale supercomputing allocations due March 13


NCAR is accepting requests from U.S. university researchers for use of supercomputing resources. Computing requests are accepted in the atmospheric and closely related sciences for projects that are supported by the National Science Foundation.

Opportunities for students and postdocs

Applications for the NCAR Earth System Science Internship for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in conducting research with NCAR scientists are due Feb. 5. 
Applications for the 2023-24 Ralph Cicerone Fellowship in Atmospheric Chemistry are due Feb. 28.
Applications and nominations for NCAR's Undergraduate Leadership Workshop are due March 24. 
Applications for NASA's 2023 Heliophysics Summer School are due March 3.
Applications are being accepted for the 2023 Community Earth System Model (CESM) Tutorial, which will be held July 10-14. 

VAPOR 3.8.0 is now live!


Download the newest version of NCAR's Visualization and Analysis Platform for Ocean, Atmosphere, and Solar Researchers (VAPOR). This version allows users can now create interactive 3D visualizations in their Jupyter Notebooks.

Antonio Busalacchi

UCAR President awarded distinguished international fellowship


Antonio J. Busalacchi, president of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), has been named an honorary member and fellow of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). Up to 10 honorary members are elected by the IUGG every four years as a tribute to “individuals who have made exceptional contributions to international cooperation in geodesy or geophysics and attained eminence in the field of Earth and space sciences.”
