FINDING OPPORTUNITIES: STAY IN THE LOOP WITH UCAR AND NSF

UCAR is excited to announce a new online community forum, coming April, where members and scientists can connect and collaborate. News, events, jobs, fellowships, and discussions will all be at this central repository. This will replace the current OppsList. To be notified when the community is open for members, fill out the interest form

You can also receive notices of upcoming events and funding opportunities available through the National Science Foundation's Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences by joining the AGS ListServ. Email Nick Anderson (nanderso@nsf.gov) to be added to the list.
NCAR is hosting a series of GPU Computing Workshops to help the community prepare for the extensive GPU-computing capabilities of the new Derecho supercomputing system. Sessions run through the end of August.
The latest version of NCAR's Visualization and Analysis Platform for Ocean, Atmosphere, and Solar Researchers, VAPOR 3.6, is now live.
Requests for large allocations of NCAR high-performance computing resources are now being accepted from U.S. university researchers who are supported by the National Science Foundation. The deadline for requests is March 21, 2022.

A SOLAR ILLUSION: CORONAL LOOPS MAY NOT BE WHAT THEY SEEM

Many coronal loops — ropey strands of plasma that scientists have long thought existed in the Sun’s atmosphere — may actually be optical illusions, according to a new NCAR-led paper that challenges prevailing assumptions of what we know, and don’t know, about the Sun.

1,000 ways to learn more about Earth system science!

UCAR's COMET Program published its 1,000th lesson on its online learning portal, called MetEd, on Feb. 17! The first online learning module was published on MetEd in 1997, with earlier computer-based learning modules published and distributed on laser discs (shown above) and, eventually, CDs, between 1990 and 1997.
